Recent silver Maple Leafs and Australian Kangaroos have modified designs with much stronger anti-counterfeiting features. Which made me think why hasn't the USMint? In 2016 with the current ASE being 30 years old, it is probably time for some change. At least, more modern anti-counterfeiting features or a new design altogether with new anti-counterfeiting features. What do you think?
I think they are making a design change, but I haven't read anywhere about improved anti-counterfeiting features. I don't really care for the laser "rows" on the Maple Leaf. I do collect these: add one to a Dansco each year.
I personally do not like their new designs so I hope they leave this design alone. The design of the Angelina looking gold coin this year was not something I would be interested in - ever.
Nothing wrong with the current one, which based on the beautiful Walking Liberty half dollar. My guess is that if they change it, it will turn out not looking so good. "If it ain't broke don't fix it"
How many instances of counterfeit SAE's have been reported in the last 30 years? If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Chris
Leave it alone unless some modification can throw the counterfeiters for a long-term loop. With those guys, I don't know if it is possible.
I only buy them for silver anyway, so I could care less if they change the business strikes or not, but I've been collecting the proofs since '86 and I hope that doesn't change.
Most responders seem to like the present version. Let's say that the obverse stays the same. The reverse could change or be slightly modified. The new Maples and Kangs have a micro-lettered # or mark that can only be seen with visual help. Yes, that is true. But, that eagle would look more natural without a heavy Roman shield on his breast and not flying and not have some sun ray(s) shining on his feathers, eh?
Well, if the chosen modification was to use the St Gaudens reverse, I'd be on board. Heck, it wouldn't suck if they used that obverse too.
I'd prefer to see the Eagle stay as is. What I would like to see is a better cent design if they intend on continuing to make it. There is so little detail on the obverse now that it is just plain ugly. Enough of the computer generated designs, let's see some real engraving come back. And wouldn't it be grand to see another educational series come back to the bills.
I guess counterfeit bullion is a serious issue which is already happening with gold bullion. Fortunately silver is not as high as it used to be. Can you imagine if it returns to the days of 50 USD / oz? I can guarantee that it will encourage counterfeiters to start cranking out their production line. While I agree that if "it ain't broken, don't fix it" - it does not hurt to be ahead in the game of counterfeits. Can you imagine hearing stories of someone pouring their life savings in bullion only to find out that they are all counterfeits???
