Ebay has them going for $1,500 - $2,000 already. People had them listed for sale even before you could get them today. Interesting/risky strategy I would think... http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=us aluminum penny&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XAmerican Eagle 2015 One Ounce Platinum.TRS0&_nkw=American Eagle 2015 One Ounce Platinum&_sacat=0
The coin is at February - May 2015 spot price was between 1100-1200. I believe the spot price could drop to as low as 650 an ounce as there is a gap in the long term chart.
I can't imagine that it will decrease in value for much longer. It's more rare than gold and silver. And, apparently, there have been a lot of issues in the mining of platinum (political). Rare + industrial or other demand = good long term value, I would think. Who knows though...
In the last 12 years or so the lowest platinum has been is around $800 an oz. (maybe slightly lower on spikes down)
If the EBay prices on the platinum proof are a bit hefty for you, jump over to the 2015 $100 high relief gold coin. I'm sure that a number of those flippers would love to make you a deal.
The first 3 secondary sales of this coin on Ebay went for: $1,675, $1,651, and $1,705 http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sop...lete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684
For historical price quote of platinum, please check here: http://www.kitco.com/charts/liveplatinum.html Note that the prices of metals are often quoted in US dollars. As the US dollars strength, which it has been against most world currencies, it would seem that various metal prices have fallen which is somewhat not necessarily true. I daresay that the US mint would have signed a contract when platinum prices were a lot higher a few months ago. If the mint signed it when platinum prices were around 1000USD / oz, would it make business sense to sell it at current prices after adding on production cost?
Did you'll notice the US Mint raised the price to $1,250. Still not available, but they went ahead and raised the price.
I hadn't noticed that. That's odd. Assuming they actually burned through all 4,000 already, what would be the point of doing that? Makes you wonder if they are going to increase production on them.
Just did a quick sold-listings check on eBay, and ruined my afternoon. Looks like they're pushing up toward $2100-2200 now.
