Happy belated Thanksgiving All! Ok, any errors by the minting process? Found this in a handful of coins I set aside for whatever reason....from what I can tell, looks like maybe a layer is missing and all kinds of raised stuff in the design....is this die clash? I posted a pic of the reverse side by side with a good Sac. Thoughts? On the reverse, the lettering and design is on top of the raised metal running through the reverse.
IMO, if those areas are raised, its most likely PMD, maybe from heat, it looks to have environmental damage, definitely not a clash, a clash would not be that strong across a device and it does not match the overlay...http://www.maddieclashes.com/dollar-overlays/ ....
@JAY-AR 2000 was the first year of the Sac, and the Mint ran into a few problems with the composition and the finish for it. I'm guessing that this specimen was one of those early coins, and the environment had something to do with it. Chris
Admitting to ignorance about how coins are minted, I'd describe that phenomenon to be a worm, and wonder if part of that worm is seen going through Sagawea's chin on the obverse.
Thanks Chris! The coin does have some rust spots in a few areas, I know the pictures don't really show the contrast in color. But the patina of the "Ugly" one is silver in color on the reverse. It's a messy looking coin over all but interesting none the less. Thanks again Chris Anymore info you could give me would be awesome! I'm going to google it now...
Anderspud, I'm a bit ignorant to the minting process as well, but, since I've been doing this coin talk thingy, I'm getting a good education......WELCOME!
