I hope you all know this contest has seriously eaten into my nickel searching time!! I've only searched $80 of nickels this last week... I've NEVER had leftovers from my $100 box each week before... WOW...

Well, I thought I would submit a story... 95% written before "I couldn't belive it, not again!" so there are no "i" at all... I hope that can get some brownie points :)
The story is true (for whatever is reported in history) and concerns treasure, which I guess is numismatic in nature! Its the true story of the start of one of the largest empires in pre-british India. (Note, apparently the coins found were gold dinars or gold staters, no one knows, so I'll stich to the one without the i). The leader who cannot be named was called Shivaji for anyone interested. Here goes!

A true story. "The Gold That Bought Freedom"
The year was 1646. The Maratha rebel (He who cannot be named by rule) had gathered a few hundred or so close followers, comrades from the days of adolescence. To that day they had played cheerfully on mud forts and jabbed paper swords at each other. Yet the real deal lay ahead. Years of brutal overseas rule had depleted the fortunes of the earnest people of Pune. They needed to break free and freedom beckoned from the walls of Fort Torana ahead. No one expected them; no one expected farmers and nomads to take up arms. The battle was short and brutal. The Marathas scored a phenomenal success.
Yet, yet they had lost men, dear brothers from the land. These were not combatants by nature; these only were the sons of farmers. They had no money. They needed food and water. They needed reasons and a dream to carry forward. To rouse the men further would be a hard task. At that moment some men started to bore a well for water. Fate only knew what lay ahead. 2 meters down, no water. 4 meters, naught. 6 meters and a dull thud came to ear. Lo and behold! A pot of.... gold staters!!! Not one, not two, but twenty two pots! The elated men brought the gold to the rebel leader. He saw the prospect of greatness for the people. He could reward the men now or he could plant a seed of hope for the common people. He was bent on the use of these staters as a platform for the "Raj (Rule)"... He used the gold to construct the famous Fort Rajgad nearby; the fort that would secure the lands adjacent. The fort would lead to the dawn of the "Raj" that would last 170 years, would carry wealth, fame and freedom to the Deccan. The "Raj" would be the last power to fall to the men from England but started from twenty two pots and some very lucky gold!
