Whould you guys bother getting this coin graded. Morgan 1897 S

Like previously said its a Morgan Dollar 1897 S. It looks in really good shape to me and was considering getting it graded. What do you guys think ill try to post some pics if i cant i guess i can email them. im not expert i didnt pay for them i was given them and a handfull of other morgans and pre 64 coins so just assessing what best route it i dont plan on selling them but would like to get the ones worth wild in cases graded while they still look good. thanks alot. 1) always take the coin out of the holder before taking pictures.
2) otherwise the pictures are useless.
3) the coin is circulated, and appears to be cleaned.
4) common date
5) not worth the money to be slabbed.

 

its out of the case, its sitting on-top of the case if you look closely. i find it unlikely its been cleaned since it was my grandpas and he was absolutely adamant about not cleaning coins. he wouldnt even let people touch them other around the edges. if that. other then a few scratches on the left side of the face which are only visible when really loooking at it at magnification all the high marks are clear, the breast on the bird, cheek bone, and leaf(or whatever it is above/right side of the head), i have circulated ones and their ravaged compared to this one considering there 100 yrs or so old. just out of curiosity y do you say its cleaned? cause you couldnt tell if it was even out of the case? which isnt that hard to spot. but can tell its cleaned? sorry for firing back back but you didn't look close enough to even see it was absolutely out of the case it was placed ontop.

 

how do you tell if it its circ and cleaned are there tests? i know ware on high marks are one indication or circulation wear/usage, i have some 1921 peace dollars that defintely show circulation wear but the cleaning thing im lost on how to spot. other than abrasive scratches from pads/cleaning agents. shouldnt there be abrasive scratches on the eagle and feathers or hair and stars on the front or liberty band on her head?

 

these are just questions im not trying to be defensive i just would like clarification as to why someone thinks its cleaned or circ or uncirc.

 

Don't waste the money to have it slabbed. XF maybe AU but not worth grading.

I concur with @Collecting Nut , unless this is Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (>65), I wouldn't bother. IMO, this is XF at best.

 

Same here. It looks cleaned as well. Much of the luster is gone. I'm wondering if there is some PVC of the coin.

 

is there a general price for getting coins graded, is it cheaper in quantity or just stick to the ones that might be of good quality(ms60 or better).for some reason when i look on pcgs site it says its down the coins would be around $500 or lower if sent. (probably will be redirected to search it up but thought id give it a shot maybe someone has a short answer or experience) sorry new to this, but definetly enjoying this huge lot of old coins i came across.

 

from what ive been told the coin hasnt been in that pvc pouch for more than 6 months he just recently did it to sort out what he had and easier to identify and croup his colllection. i guess ill just take it into a place like liberty and see what they say, only place i know of around me in long beach, ca area.

 

It's not really the grade as much as the value. It's going to cost about $40 to $50 per coin and you will have to join PCGS or have a local dealer send the coin in. Your coin is not a good choice to send in. It will not straight grade and the grading cost will be as much as the value of the coin.

 

ok the coin was free so i thought it might be "nice" to see what it came back as" I understand that now, especially if you paid 25 to 30 dollars for the coin and cambe back only being worth 45 bucks

 

There is nothing wrong with having that coin graded. I wouldn't do it because I would still have a silver dollar worth $26.00 but would have spent much more to have it graded.

I recently sent in a Peace dollar that had very odd surfaces just to see what they would do with it. They straight graded it MS 64 but it was of no financial benefit to me. I just learned a little more about market grading.

 

Definitely not worth sending in.

As for spotting cleaning, sometimes you can see signs of cleaning directly, but it's more like seeing a lack of originality. Being able to do that comes only with experience.

Looks like an AU50 to me. What's it worth? If it's a common date, then it's not worth the cost of certification.

Yes. Take it to a coin shop. An in hand opinion is better than opinions from images.
