While this is a gorgeous reproduction with 'provenance', I find it hard to grasp why it seems to be worth more than $50-$100.00 to anyone?? Any thoughts??? http://www.ebay.com/itm/29161594628...3&exe=13432&ext=34326&sojTags=exe=exe,ext=ext
Cast or no cast that is one good looking portrait of Claudius. I guess some people are willing to pay big to have a Claudius portrait...regardless of whether it's a cast. Don't blame them, Claudius was a handsome fella.
I purchased a Greek 'replica' a while back from the "British Museum' and it is 'beautiful' and has 'provenance dating to the 1860's, but cost only about $80.00 shipped---and it was my only one. Frankly, I have never heard of that British Doctor and WWI vet before this listing, so i suppose that is at least as important to the bidders as the coin itself---as JA suggests. Just wondering---although there does seem to be a 'modest' market for replicas in a general sense---but mostly for less than $30.00
Because its not just any cast imitation, its a 'Paduan' imitation made during the Renaissance. These are collectible in their own right.
Ha I am going to find some cast coins, and say they are from the ex Brit collection of Oliver Fiddlesworth (1884-1961) and make some money...Can't believe I haven't thought of this yet. First we are buying coins, then we are buying slabs, next up we are buying prov. maybe in the future "ex. Ancientnoob" will add some value. Im going to find some Gela fakes and say they are from the AN collection LOL. See how well that flies on ebay.
Paduan is ok. Are we sure this is not a cast of that? How could you tell. I would think it would get mooshier each time it is done. Is this original moosh?
Paduans (and many others including BM electrotypes) are highly collectible and sought after. I am not surprised at the price. A bigger venue would likely have gotten $500. A nice deal for the purchaser.
Yes, I imagine so......I have heard of those, but I wonder why it was not mentioned in the sellers post. Or did I just miss that somehow??
http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1938604 Auction 9 1642 (« | ») 29. April 2014 200 EUR 240 EUR Description Struck Paduan, type of Claudius, made after the works of Giovanni da Cavino (1500-1570), AE (g 18,42 mm 36 h 7), Spes Augusta. Klawans 3.About extremely fine. I would consider this a good deal. The ebay coin for $200.......not so much,
Ya, that's just not how it happens. When you see an old, verifable pedigree - REGARDLESS of how minor the individual was - you can bet that its real. Only good dealers bother with a pedigree like that anyway, and good dealers wouldn't lie about it. They're more than happy to bend the truth and make up other kinds of names, though. The fake, made up pedigrees are stuff like the "North American Collection," "the Mountainview Collection," the "JBH Alphabet Soup Collection," etc. This is an early cast. Not struck, but not too mushy either. They're paying full retail plus for it on ebay. A bad price, but at least in the realm of possibility.
I disagree with this. In the community at large many collectors wish to remain anonymous and such names are given to protect their anonymity. I would however place no such importance on provenances on Ebay, but elsewhere it is genuine.
Hummm replica coins I would never put my money in, oooo a nice coin you know it is a fake everytime you look at it...what is joy? replica / fakes should all be banned.
Very true. But when dealers do manufacture names, this is the kind they go with. Not "Archibald Q. Chuffington (1852-1910)."
