I am a little confused about the difference between VF and XF cents. Some say that the ribbon on the left side has to be complete where others tell by the sharp liberty, hair, and feathers. For example. What would you grade this coin? Some would say it is VF but by some standards like the photograde, it would be XF. I am not talking about people that would change the grade depending on if they are buying or selling which some do. I called this coin a very fine coin and possible I was right or under graded it. How about the second coin? Would you call this very fine?
OK, that is what I got. VF for both. I listed them as that on Ebay, and the 1907 sold quick. I always think that I had just been picked when that happens but that is not always the case. The buyer obviously just liked it. I thought VF for 1907 since the ribbon is not full and the curls are too worn near it. There is one and half diamonds but hard to see in the pic.
VF for me too. But, what do you find that it compares to here: http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Indian/Grades ?
I'm quite sure I've posted it for you at least once before, but Rick Snow has a fine pdf that explains IHC grading basics in a refreshingly cut and dry manner. I would, again, suggest checking it out.
Yeah - lower number VF - kinda like when your friend hooks you up on a blind date and tells you she got a cute face BUT she's a "little" chubby.
Yes, that is the funny thing. XF on the photo-grade but I did read a Indian head grading pdf that would object to that stating that the XF coins have fully separated ribbons but not all the diamonds present.
You can't really go by the diamonds all the time. They are not always sharply struck. I look more at the end of the feathers except on the early copper-nickel cents.
Yeah, they're both just under EF, the 1903 being the stronger. A diamond complement isn't always the standard, as some of these dates are just weak in the diamonds, but on these dates it is the standard, i.e., the rule, not the exception.
One of the most difficult things for me (besides not buying coins) is the ability to grade Walkers from VF to XF or visa versa.
