Hello. I am new to coin collecting and have started up with my daughters. The release of the John Adams dollar is tomorrow, and we noticed that the code on the roll of coins on the US Mint website says JD4. However, if you buy a bag of coins, the code is JD1. Would someone be willing to explain this? We tried google-ing it, but can't find an explanation. Thanks for your time.

I could be wrong, but I have always understood those numbers to simply be stock numbers, with the letters designating a particular product and the numbers representing each variation of that product.

    Welcome!!!

and I believe that Roy is correct. I believe it is nothing more than a Part Number used by the mint for order entry.

Coin collecting is a great activity to share with the kids and many of us do it here. The tooth fairy in our house likes to deliver different types of dollar coins each time a new tooth comes out. Soon I think it will be halves and then who knows what. All circulated and not too valuable but fun to discuss. Thankfully the dead president program will give me many new variations as my two year old reaches that stage. My seven year old is dropping teeth now like leaves in the fall.

    Good Luck

As Roy said, "JD4" is just a product number that the Mint store uses for inventory. For the Pres. dollars, XX01 are "P" bags, XX02 are "D" bags, XX03 are "P" rolls and XX04 are "D" rolls.

Thank you for the response and info.

Yes, we started with the tooth fairy, and they have a special pillow with a pocket to help her find their teeth (mine are 8 and 6). I...uh... I meand SHE initially some Eisenhower dollar coins, but I have only 6 of those so we stopped doing that. Now, there are three different dollar coins to chose from and a Kennedy half dollar for good measure.

Anyway, thanks. And thanks for this board.

    John.

Hey Copper John, Just by coincidence I happen to have 25 loose teeth that may come out tomorrow...just in time for the release of the John Adams dollar. I'll PM you my address if you'd like...lol

    COPPERJOHN,
I also have a "collection" of teeth. They are not mine though. They are from somme of the "jobs" that I do for certain people. I will gladly trade the teeth for a coin. Please let me know.
