Other than the obvious signs that this coin was casted and not struck, is there something else wrong with it? Is this a case where the obverse and the reverse of the coin do not belong on the same coin? I want to learn for educational purposes.
I'm not at home to look at it right now, and I haven't looked at the coin itself in a couple of months, but these are the seller photos and it's looking pretty cast to me. You win some and you lose some. Funny you mentioned avoiding Cyprus--I'd heard that before and usually do the same, but this was an impulse bid and I didn't notice the Cyprus origin until afterwards and "You're from Cyprus" didn't seem like a very good explanation for cancelling my bid..
That guy is making a killing with his fakes. C'mon CT, let's shut him down! Everyone report him on the count of 3... 1... 2...
Someone that bought from him figured out it was a fake and left him Neutral feedback. ??? That should have been Negative!
From the same seller... Is this one fake? Buyer spent $900. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Roman-...RIA-ACG-Moguntiacum-Mint-268-AD-/111692827693
The Laelianus is definitely fake. I would have thought anybody who's in the market for buying coins of obscure emperors would have acquired plenty of knowledge and experience from collecting the more common emperors first. Obviously not. Notifying eBay is worth a go if you have the time. I managed to get a fraud shut down once too - the trouble is, there's so many of them! As a general rule: If there's a coin of a rare and obscure emperor for sale on eBay, and the dealer doesn't have credible 'credentials' (eg vcoins store, well known coin company, membership of numismatic associations etc), then the coin is probably fake. eBay isn't where people go when they have high end coins to sell.
I have serious doubts about your coin hoth. The features seem too soft. Have you checked the fake databases to see if there is a match?
As a newbie, would anyone mind PMing me the link to the fake databases please? I've been fortunate buying from some of you and a good dealer here in south Florida, but it's still nice to have a reference in case I ever see a deal somewhere else and I want to double check.
If you do report some of the seller's coins, do the highest price ones first. That way we can all focus on getting his biggest profit coins removed.
Yeah, there are fake sellers from Cyprus but then I know a honest dealer from Cyprus too. He gave me this coin as a gift.
I don't either, although so far I haven't found any definitive fake matches. It's a tough type to authenticate.
I haven't able to find anything on forgerynetwork.com. For months now I've been trying to use Forum but I can never get images to appear in threads. I'm home now and the coin looks a bit better in hand but I've pretty much resigned myself to its fakeness. I'm not QUITE ready to junk-box it yet, but the alternative universe where I'm in the market for a gorgon/anchor is looking more and more like the universe I'll be inhabiting. The silver lining here is that I only spent about $25 shipped..
http://www.snible.org/coins/black_sea_hoard.html The interesting thing about the Black sea Hoard fakes is that they were struck from a large series of fake dies. The first were all diobols but they later made other denominations and variations. Other fakers even made some cast fakes using a struck fake as the mother coin. I suggest not buying any silver coin of the Black Sea region from any source you do not know well. I have made a point on not keeping up with these because I'd rather study things I find more interesting. I have a couple that I have had for a long time that came from a good source but I don't swear on them. I believe they are genuine. I don't plan on buying more.
Hey hoth2, I sure hope that your cool coin runs the gauntlet of authenticity ... => we all love when the examples prove to be solid (fakes are always bad for everybody except the dick that made the fake!!) Ummm, I have an extremely humble example ... although in my case I may have "slightly" increased its value because I spent $50 for a laminated David Sear piece-of-peace-of-mind!! cheers brother (good luck) *whatev* ... I hear you dudes judging my coin-decision!! (creepy judgers) => yah, I admit that I only spent $40 on the coin itself (but man, when that dude challenged me and said that this sweet coin was a fake => I had to send it to David Sear!!) ... sure, maybe it was a waste o' cash? ... => at least now I'll be able to sell it with confidence!!
