A few recent purchases: RR types

I have been finishing this year much as I started it----- with a 'shot-gun' approach to coin collecting---attempting to 'replace' so many types I no longer possess. The two I will post fell comfortably within my former budget and are generally attractive with significant historical interest; they 'speak' to me on so many levels...

The first was struck about 98 BC by T Cloulius (or Cloelius, Siver Quinarius, 1.72 grams, 16.6 mm) and refers to Marius' victories over the Teutones and Ambrones at Aquae Sextiae in 102 BC and the Cimbri at Vercellae in 101 BC. It's also believed this issue helped finance Marius' settlement of his veterans primarily in Cisalpine Gaul.

Laureate head of Jupiter, F with pellet above and below. Victory palm in left over shoulder, crowning trophy with wreath at right; seated Gallic captive and carnyx (war trumpet) at base of trophy, T CLOVI downward in center.

The second is a 'typical' Sextans (5.45 grams, 20.3 mm) with Mercury and a Prow, struck 211-208 BC, and was circulating at the time of the battle of Metaurus (207 BC)----a pivotal battle of the Hannibalic War. The Carthaginian army under Hasdrubal was defeated virtually assuring ultimate victory for the Romans.

Head of Mercury right, wearing winged 'petasos' and two pellets as mark of value. Prow of galley, ear of grain above KA, ROMA below.

I like them both. I have this thingy for Mercury, I guess because of the Mercury dime. But I really like the T Cloulius, especially the reverse. Love the horned helmet on the trophy. Good eye Mikey.

Really great purchases, MZ. I like the quinarius but I really love the sextans. I bought two of the McCabe provenance coins recently as well(one of which I posted in this thread) and I had been really considering that sextans. Should've got it when I had the chance :) Count me jealous.

    Wonderful post Cyrrhus!!!

I have a provincial TET or two on bid---hopefully one will fall within my maximum bid....A week or so will tell the tale LOL

Thanks, 'red' !! I hope we don't cause each other future disappointments, but I guess that's inevitable---although i will be focusing on Greek Tets by January.....

Hmmm, then TIF will cause me a bit of distress by purchasing what I had my eye on LOL

We have a similar strategy - do you think "spray and pray" fits? Anyway, out of the two I like the first one the best. The barbarian tribes are a great interest of mine and the depiction on the reverse appeals to that interest. The possibility that this was used for the settlement of veterans appeals to my coin collecting interests. Well done!

Very nice coins there, Mikey. Wish I could afford Roman Republic coins. I have a AE Semis that I'm not even sure if it's official but I like it a lot even still. I'll just wait and be patient.

'Gil', please post that Semis. I'd love to see it....and perhaps someone can help eliminate your uncertainty.

I see nothing to suggest it isn't 'official' or genuine and I like it quite a bit...

Hopefully, the others feel the same way:)

It's the engraving style that leads me to believe it's not official. Everything else is right about the coin.

Nothing jumped out to me about the semis being fake. I could be completely wrong...also full disclosure, I only own one. And it's from Hispania.

I don't see anything to suggest it's inauthentic but I think it probably is from Hispania based on the style. I also did a quick check in Crawford and couldn't find a match for it.

Naw, it's definitely authentic in an ancient sense, I believe. It's either official or a contemporary forgery.
