Yep, you are right on the money Aiden... Give the mods some credit, its a tuff job, with very little reward other than the satisfaction of a job well done... My hat is off to the mods...

We should all be involved in reporting spam.It is a pity that the moderators don't ban the spammers when the spammers are online at the same time that they're on.I'd like to see what would happen if a spammer got banned.

You know what, I don't know whats going on here but someting is not right and there is some kind of war brewing on this forum now for a few days. I've moderated huge lists and I can see that someone has been posting under different aliases and running a little war with the moderators here.

I suggest that folks stop, dead stop, now.... just out of basic human decency.

These moderaters are a lot more patient then I would be thats for sure. I'd have whole class A networks blocked if need be to end this simmering war now. In general, keep your opinion about the moderators to yourself. Nobody cares what you think other than that it ticks off regulars on the list.

From what I can see of it, being a moderator is rather a thankless task. They will be blamed for censoring posts and limiting the subject matter, but if they did not I think the site would be a uninteresting mess and people would complain anyway. So when was a little on-line disipline a bad thing?

I might not be as active as alot of the other members here but I think this is the best coin forum i've found so far. The mods are doing a great job of keeping this a great & pleasant site to visit. :)

The mods here do a thankless job, and the only time they hear feedback is when people complain. I think we should all personally thank them from time to time. It goes miles and miles in goodwill.

i dont think the deleted thread in question has anythig to do with a mod taking themselves too serious. an explanation for why it was altered and locked was given and was FULLY warranted in not only my eyes, but alot of other members as well. The coins in question 'may' not hold value to you, but that is not for anyone other then the person who owns them to decide. It is absolutely RUDE for me to call somone elses coins 'crap', 'junk' or any other dergatory comment. I have alot of items in my collection that may hold very little value in alot of the minds of the nice folks on this forum - but if everyone told me all i had was junk, I might be inclined not to hang around. It all in how you put it. You want to tell me that my collection doesnt have alot of high priced items, or my collection might not sell above that i bought it for ... that is close to saying my collection is junk. as a community, we do try to keep chat friendly and civil. When one has somethign they consider valuable stolen, and then people rub salt in the wounds.... and then bickering back and forth about the mean comments....

was this an example of a mod being too serious.. no!

this was an example of a mod looking out for a valued member and trying to maintain the integrity of the forum.

But, I will say one thing that's unusual and if it hadn't been over 20 years since the crime you can be sure I'd be exploring it further.

This makes two times I've mentioned that I'd lost 20 or so Seated Liberty Dollars back in 1982 and this is the second time that the thread or my post was deleted. Hmmm, LOL... ;)

As for the Mods, it is truly a thankless job, but someone has to do it.

What I saw in that thread had ZERO business being said EVER. Were they too strict - absolutely not. I think they were too lenient! This is a coin forum, not a personal insult forum.

Having said that, there were several posts in that thread which deserved to be kept imo. But then I do not know what is involved with tying sort through all of the messages.

What makes you think that spammers aren't banned?
You do, every day. What happens is that they don't spam again under the same ID.

If you know of some way to automatically and accurately identify spammers (including those banned under one ID and re-registering under another) at the time they are registering, please let us in on your secret!

Without such a technique it would be necessary for a member's posts to be reviewed by a Moderator before being posted! That's unacceptable.

I back the decision of the mods with that thread 100%. I think they do a great job on here of keeping the discussions friendly and on topic.

My biggest fear would be that this board would eventually turn into some of the other coin boards, which are nothing but bashing other members' collection and other drama.

    Totally agree.

To appreciate this well-regulated forum, go to one with NO regulation and see the difference.

I'm a whitewater kayaker, and one forum prides itself as "paddling uncensored". There has never been any moderation of any kind, and things really get out of hand. Good people are turned off and leave.

One can almost understand it, given the nature of the sport. But given the nature of numismatics, we need to stay clean and solid.

I think all of the Mods do a great job here with keeping the spam out and by keeping all of the threads to a reasonable level of insanity....:goofer: . I report each and every spammer I see here. I think as a good gesture and a small token of our gratitude we should pass the plate around and send all of the Mods on a Hawaiian Cruise.

A little off (ok, a lot off) topic and on the lighter side - For those of you that lead a sheltered life and never traveled to Pittsburgh, everyone that has grown up in Pittsburgh takes pride in the native language. There are dictionaries published just for this area of the country.

    http://www.amazon.com/Sam-McCools-New-Pittsburghese-Pittsburgher/dp/B00070XPCS/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-6540029-1797425?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179334214&sr=8-1

Yinz can also be spelled Yunz and can be translated into the English phrase "All of You" or just "You" depending on the context. :)

On Topic - I fully understand why the tread was locked and if I was a moderator I would have done the same thing Roy did. I think I was one of those who offered good advice without emotions and I'm sure the guy who started the thread got the message, so the content was fine to delete.

The mods do a really good job here for 99.99% of what they do. Find someone in business that does as well and I think you will find a very successful business. Lets keep it about coins and the moderators will take care of the rest.

As a "recovering moderator" elsewhere who hopes to never have to hold that position again (with one exception that sees about 5 posts on a good month!), I can speak from experience that it is as thankless a job as exists anywhere, and worse. The fact that we hardly see any spam at all is a tribute to their hard work.

Anyone thinks this is too draconian a venue is free to self-select out, but consider a few other stricter ideas:
    - Signing your full real name on every post
    - No handles
    - Verified information in profile before posting
    - No signatures of any kind
    - Every post moderated and edited as required

    Yes, it happens elsewhere.

The key issue in my mind with respect to the 'net is that there is a percentage of the population that believes that they can and should be allowed to say anything while hiding behind an anonymous handle. I usually find that when the tables are turned, these anonymous individuals wither under the treatment they are so eager to dole out.

    Right on ! Well said.

The folks that complain the most have the least to complain about. They can deal it out, but they can't take it.

This is an excellent, well-regulated forum. I am a guest here - a guest of the folks who work hard to provide this board. Let's honor those guys.

Being able to post here is a privilege, not a right.
