This is @zumbly's doing. I was thoroughly jealous of his chimaera control mark stater (and others). This coin came up in a recent auction and it was love at first sight. A rampant chimaera ? Yes please!! I've been trying to duplicate @AncientJoe's reflection template (with his permission) and have used the first attempt here. It will need some tweaking. Figuring out how to have the reflections end where the "spotlight" fades was tricky. CORINTHIA, Corinth circa 375-300 BCE AR stater, 22 mm, 8.55 g, 1h Obv: Pegasus flying left; qoppa below Rev: helmeted head of Athena left; A-P flanking neck truncation; to right, chimaera standing left Ref: Ravel 1010; Pegasi 428; BCD Corinth 102; HGC 4, 1848 ex CNG Inventory 828126 (November, 2008) ex Gorny & Mosch 170 (13 October 2008), lot 1381 ex Giessener Münzhandlung 21 (22 March 1982), lot 37 Please post your Pegasus staters and coins with interesting control marks
There it is! I love that rampant Chimaera, mine is the sneakier stalking variety. I do believe our pegasi are die siblings though!
Great-looking coin. I just realized a couple of weeks ago that those Athena helmets are not actually big cone-headed helmets and that they are actually a normal-headed helmet pushed up, which awesome in it's kind-of-weirdness and specificity.
TIF, that image is pretty darn good if you ask for my opinion. Oh, and the coin? I hate both you and Z. Now I want one and I can't afford it. THANKS! It is a beauty!
Why, indeed you are right! I hadn't noticed that. You can even see the unicorn horn die scratch and adjacent field scratch on both coins. Z... please show us your apotropaic pudenda virilia stater again
Man, that's such a sweet, sweet chimaera symbol ... TIF, I'm super glad that you ended-up scoring this sweet example Sure, you already have a very cool chimaera coin and you already have an ultra-sweet Corinth stater, but holy-awesome-score, Batchick!! => that coin "ROCKS" Yah, unlike a few high-enders => that coin is definitely worth the couple of grand that you dropped scorin' it!! Fantastic!! (I'm totally jealous of your TIFness)
Here's my other Corinth stater, the first "big" coin I purchased, likely responsible for pushing me off the ancient coin collecting cliff CORINTHIA, Corinth 345-307 BCE AR stater, 8.65 gm Obv Pegasus flying left, qoppa below Rev: helmeted head of Athena left wearing necklace; head of Silenus behind Ref: Ravel 1046. Calciati 408. Scarce variety. This scarce variety was chosen to represent Corinth staters, #23 in Harlan J. Berk's book, "100 Greatest Ancient Coins".
Fortunately, it didn't cost that much . I'm happily surprised that the bidding wasn't more aggressive!
I didn't want to be Creepy Apotropaic Pudenda Virilia Stater Flasher Guy (again), but since you asked nicely...
Holy smokes, awesome coin TIF. I see you have a thing for wacky toning, must make the whole of the collection look quite colorful, more so then most. This is no doubt an excellent score and certainly an awesome control mark. Kudos to you, coin sis.
Amazing coin TIF! Great work on the pic effects , but do you think you're using to much light on the coin?
Perhaps. It is difficult to find the right balance when shooting reflective silver coins. Some attempts had whiteouts due to the shiny surfaces. I do like to tilt toned coins until the iridescence is captured. I think these images strike a reasonable balance between having the right angle of light to adequately demonstrate the colors without causing too many whited-out areas. I may try reshooting it at some point in an effort to eliminate some of the reflections on Athena's helmet, but otherwise I'm happy with the shots.
holy smokes that is gorgeous TIF . the little bukranion on this one influenced my purchase of this coin.
