Yes, they are the bad guys! They are the ones who established the websites that accept coins for examination. What makes it worse is that the majority of these rinky-dink doubled dies are not acceptable for attribution by either NGC or PCGS. Sure you might get some of them graded by ANACS or ICG, but coins attributed by them don't sell for as much, and the raw coins would sell for even less. So, what is the point of having these "microbes" authenticated anyway? Chris
I know one thing Chris, you have to spend money to make money . You will never make any real money off of " Pocket Change " ....
Well I guess its what ever you think real money is . I've made more money in the last 3 months buy coins, then in 3 years of pocket change . Ever been at a coin show, know named mentioned . If you even bring pocket change findings, know one is even interested in them ..
Tom, here's a word of advise, if you are going to search Lincolns and collect the minor varieties, join the Lincoln Cent Resource forum. You'll learn more about them than you ever thought possible...not to mention you won't be belittled for collecting minor varieties. I've yet to understand why it bothers folks so bad that people collect minor Lincoln varieties. They need to pound it home that these aren't worth your time. You know what? They are full of it! It's plenty worth my time! You know why? I enjoy the crap out of it. Some people don't have wads of money lying around to spend on other money, yet still enjoy collecting. This used to be my favorite forum BY FAR. Nowadays it seems you get more attention over a damaged coin than a legitimate variety or error. You put a Cherrypickers Guide variety up and get 4 or 5 congrats. You put up a minor variety and get belittled for a page or two about how minor it is. You throw a coin in a wood chipper, take a pic, post it, and the arguments go on for 10 to 15 pages. What's happened here?!? Maybe eBay could help out by banning the sell of these crappy, minor doubled dies. Let's not allow people to collect what they want to. Hell, someone posted a few weeks ago that eBay should ban machine damaged coins. I sure don't collect them, but some do. If you don't believe it, and I know some don't, look at sells for correctly described MD. But, since that certain poster doesn't like it ban them. eBay ban these...absolutely asinine!! Tom, sorry for hijacking your thread, I just can't take the BS anymore!
He didn't say one cannot have great finds, but only that real money will not be made. Just as an example.... let's say someone is fortunate enough to find a $250 coin roll searching, but it took them 250 hours of searching to find it; that's a horrible return on their investment, and one's time, when it could be spent doing other things, is certainly valuable. This isn't to say there's anything wrong with searching, of course, but there's little else less profitable one wishing to be productive could do with their time.
Can you see the arrow? It looks quite prominent to me. I certainly don't need a microscope to see it. It's certainly as prominent as the 1993 doubled ear. As far as the discussion on minor varieties goes I agree with everyone's opinions. If I find a Cherrypickers variety I will get a few congrats, If I have some MD, run over by a car, and toned with dog pee, I'll get a lively discussion. If I see things that are not even there but promise to reveal my theory only if everyone is nice to me I'll get 12,000 views... lol I feel like some people think there are about 10 doubled dies worth finding because they are worth over $1,000 or so. I like to look through pennies and try to find die varieties, and other errors. I am at the mercy of what comes from the mint to the bank. I get a LOT of 1990's and shield cents, and mostly Denver which are mostly a waste of time. I have been trying to find that 1993D doubled ear, the 1994, 1992 DDR so far to no avail. I get some 1969, 70, 71, 72 San Francisco mint coins and hope to find something good. I am not a wheeler dealer, don't go to coin shows, or buy off of ebay. I go through about a box a week. It's relaxing, and theraputic. I am getting better at identifying die errors so that is heartening. Thanks for being out there everyone, even you losers who disagree with me... hahaha. If I wanted to make "real money" I'd sell drugs.... You know what else? None of my coins are for sale....
Yet that black eye upon this hobby still sits on every large bookseller's shelf beckoning, and strongly suggesting to those who don't know any better that they too can strike it rich.
I also agree with this too . Go on ebay and see the Ike Dollars that get turn into ANACS thats say DDO or DDR . Now if you go and get the Ike Book by Thomas Kalantzis, or go on their web site and know what your taking about, or looking for ANACS will put this on their slab . FW: 1971-S IDDDO-156 71-S BS WD- S IDDDR-WH-1 IDDP-146. I was wondering if you would put this information that's under my " Subject " on you slab, or do I need to send it to Tom first at IDDD ? This coin is also a DDO & DDR . Here's some images of the coin with the link to IDDD ( 156 ) . http://www.ikedollardoubledie.com/iddd-1971-s-page-three.php Thank you for contacting us, We do recognize this variety and would happily verify it for you. Attached is a submission form.
......and that's why I never bother going through pocket change. Oh sure, if I happen to spot a silver coin, Wheatie or IHC, which really isn't hard to do, I will save it, but that's as far as I will go. Chris
Jay, you yourself said and I quote : If I had money I would look for Vams and you won't find them in pocket change Jay ......... No punt intended ..........
I'm guessing you're fairly young then.... Hey, I used to do it too - hotel lots, rest stops, etc and even once oh-so-brilliantly on train tracks somewhere in BFE Pennsylvania, wherever convenient, cheap, and didn't waste money - but as they say, "with age comes wisdom"... and aches and pains and...
