On the head of the quarter there is a lack of detail in the hair and not a strong impression of Washington's head. And notice a squigley line in his hair? Also, the lines going across the head. the words on the quarter are impressioned just fine. On the back, there seems to be a small gouge near the S in the word Perry's. Are any of these markings possible errors? Zoom in to get a better look.
I kinda figured that. But my main curiosity is about the lack of detail when the rest of the quarter seems normal. Compared to other quarters it does not have the same detail in the hair. Also the whole head just seems as though it didn't get pressed on properly, almost what a worn coin would look like. The only difference is that this coin doesn't seem to be worn in any other place than the head and the hair.
I concur with the rest but don't give up. This quarter was known for a doubled die at the jacket on the reverse. It can be found in the listings at doubleddie.com, John Wexler's error site. Also, while checking quarters, take a close look at the base of Washington's bust for minor die cracks, these will appear as raised lines of metal and not scratches. On the older reverses with the eagle check the left wing for die cracks. There are a lot of these from the 80's/90's. Also minor but still collectible. On nickels check the left & right base of Monticello for die cracks that extend to the rim. On Roosevelt dimes you may find raised metal that are called die breaks at the face. On older wheat cents check all of the lettering and numerals for filled letters and numbers, these are called die chips.
Here is my coin with what seems to be a going in the same spot on S. And it looks as if I have a die cracks on the neck of the bust. I see scratches but I also see the so called crack.
It also looks like there something going on with the right side of his jacket and the right eye is missing.
The rim look normal. It looks like a slight MAD (Misaligned Die). Nothing really major. Still nice to have in a collections bin.
I also think I see a small die gouge to the right of the eye in Victory. Might just be a scratch but like you say, good for the collection.
