Possibly a counter stamp but to hard to tell from the wear and the photo.

Is there a date? $0.25 is good for a large cent pocket piece. The punch could be from many sources. Does it go all the way through like Asian coins with square holes?

Musta been made by some of my ancestors - I come from a long line of squares.

My thought is that perhaps someone started to nail it, possibly over a barn door (as that was considered to bring "good luck" back in the day), then changed their mind. Maybe they needed a bigger hammer, or their sweet tooth needed a fix. The old "cut" nails that were commonly used in the days of yore were close to square on the end and about that size. I have quite a few examples of large cents and tokens with nail holes thru them.
