Trivia: Large Cents

    The 1839 Matron Head Large Cent produced by the Philadelphia Mint gives the variety collector 15 different ones to collect.

    The following link is to Coin Facts website. Notice the Newcomb numbers 1 thru 15. Click on each to see the variety.

    Take your time. Look closely at the reverses of all those varieties. Do you notice something different about the Booby Head varieties? It's one of the few ways to tell a genuine Booby Head from a counterfeit one:

    Did you notice there's no line below the word "cents" on a genuine Booby Head? If someone is trying to sell you a Booby Head that has a line below "cents" on the reverse, it is an altered coin made from one of the common Matron Head varieties or a counterfeit one.
