I decided to start a poll. Which "slab" is generally preferred for GSA Morgans? Given that PCGS now offers a slab that retains the original GSA holder, which one is more attractive?
NGC ribbon on the original slab. From a personal perspective I want the original box and certificate of authenticity, though I can't tell you whether it truly makes any difference.
NGC everyday of the week. I like that the NGC graded GSA's still fit nicely into their original box. PCGS adds a second layer of plastic to the original. In my opinion that is just a horrible way to present the GSA coin and it will never mate with it's original box. ANACS is ok, but they are not as well respected as NGC.
I send all my silver dollars that I have graded to PCGS except for GSAs, which go to NGC, simply because they'll fit in the original packaging. PCGS's slab slab was a mistake, as far as I'm concerned.
I prefer NGC graded GSA. If I happened to buy one graded by PCGS, I'd likely crack it or cross it to NGC
I wonder how hard it would be to crack that outer plastic without breaking the GSA plastic. I honestly wonder how much thought process went on, over PCGS regarding this.
@jtlee321 , good question. I really don't know. If I found a PCGS graded GSA I liked, I'd buy it. I wouldn't be happy with their outer case. Before I did anything, I would call NGC for options.
They are definitely crackable without a problem, just have to be careful. These are the same slabs used on the 5 oz mint hockey puck ATB coins. I think I had the first PCGS GSA to cross to NGC. I gave them an extra cheap coin to use as a test before they cracked the expensive coin I was trying to cross. Took a few calls and approvals since they had not seen the holders yet. If your coins crosses NCG will crack for you and then band it.
