Although I passed on this coin a few days ago, last night it suddenly seemed like a decent buy at about half of the original asking price---- and a counter-offer of just slightly above that 'seemed' reasonable so I clicked 'agree' before giving it much further thought.....the pluses negating the negatives to my 'late night Greg' frame of mind. Of course, I now wonder if it was even worth the price I paid despite being only the second fourree I own and depicting a rather scarce Empress portrait---- that distracting hole is impossible to ignore---let alone the characteristic 'damaged' condition of virtually all fourree's. I may have to ask TIF for help imagining how that hole got there in the first place, adding any positive attribute to this coin I possibly can LOL BTW, the seller is a well-known and respected e-Bay vendor. Fourree Denarius of Domitia, Rome Mint Draped bust right, standing peacock right RIC II 151 (Domitian) RSC 2 As always, please feel free to post any coin(s) you believe are any way related.
The question is, is a holed fouree of Domitia better than no Domitia at all? Your answer is obviously yes. I've got a few gnarly fourees myself - you collect them for their interest rather than beauty.
A holed fouree? That's a very elite club-- you and Eng might be the only CoinTalk members who have such a thing .
Well, it does have some interest and certainly will cause a reaction of some kind from those who happen to gaze upon it. Obviously, the Domitia portrait was what I found of most interest---having one rather than none. And, I can't help but wonder if the coin was holed as 'jewelry' or 'nailed' to something....I suppose we'll never know.
Not a bad impulse buy, I really like it. However, you really should do something about your impulsive buying. You should learn from the master, I've gone almost 24 hours without buying a coin.
Put a gold chain on it and wear it. You'll need a rapper name, like MC Mikey Da Zee. Wear it to shows and be cool.
If the price was right, I would have purchased it as well. I have a couple of holed coins and the hole does not bother me as it does some. It's just too bad the hole cuts into Domitia's face.
very cool coin Mikey, i've seen that coin many times on vcoins, if only these coins could talk, there story would be awesome. i do have a gold fouree. the story on this one is a Roman solider ripped it off a peasant neck after he ran him through with a sword!!
Some coins were holed in order to be worn as jewelry. Fourrees were holed when identified in order to condemn them as not good money.
Well, whether the 'coin' is worth what i paid or not, it does still interest me, although---like Bing---I wish the hole was a bit more strategically placed. It does seem logical that these types would be 'holed' to clearly distinguish them from 'good money'. But, I prefer Engs story line a bit more
