I've heard that coin roll hunting is best during the holiday months toward the end of the year. Last week I found 113 common date wheaties out of eight rolls of customer wrapped pennies. This week I found a 1906 Indian Head penny out of ten customer wrapped rolls, no wheaties. I get one wheatie out of eight rolls searched, on average, during the year. I guess I need to get a box of pennies this week and see how that works out. Has anyone had similar results in Nov-Dec?
Alot of people only take their change in for Christmas shopping and you will see more stuff taken in this time of year. Ive just found that the volume of change taken in is much greater this time of year.
I probably found more silver halves last December/January than the entire rest of the year. Since then I've gotten a silver or two at a time, with lots of strikeouts in between.
Hmmm I never thought about a spike in luck during the holidays. But it does make sense or "cents" as Markus1959 remarked! I haven't done this in a while but I may have to pick it up since the holidays are coming up!
I think it's a common idea but I don't think it holds any water. I don't think that people are raiding grandpa's coin collection each Thanksgiving. It's most likely that people have a change jar thy they have been saving up during the year, and that cash it in when they need a little more cash. Is it possible someone found a bunch of old coins in their attic, sure, but what are the odds of this happening every year at the same time? Remember correlation does not imply causation.
It is just that people are dipping into stuff that has been laying around so they can buy stuff for the holidays. Lately I have been racking up hundreds of Ike dollars, rolls of halves etc. Old bills come out of the woodwork too, just last week I got a Series 1928-A $100, and two Series 1934 $20s at my bank. It is the Jolly Time of the year for the "from circulation" collection.
Folks dig deep this time of year. I'm sure some older jars and rolls get deposited. It might increase the odds of finding cool stuff a tiny bit.
Last week I went to my favorite bank and they had $20.00 of customer rolled pennies. Naturally, I bought them all. They were saving them for me as an older customer brought them in. I have only gone through 10 of the 40 rolls and have found 27 wheat (mostly common dates), 11 Canadian (1 being a centennial), and I made 4 rolls of all copper (pre 1982). Not too bad so far.
