Carausius Æ Antoninianus, London mint, 289-290 AD, 2.28g, 22mm OBV: IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. REV: PA-X AVG, Pax standing left, holding branch and sceptre. F in left field, O in right field. ML in exergue. REF: RIC 101, Sear 3562 [e1988] This coin was a order filler and I paid $20 for it, it is a slot filler for sure. It's difficult to find a cheap higher grade Carausius just because most of them did not fare too well over centuries and probably wasn't high quality coming out of the mint back then. Nerva AE As, 96-98 AD, 11.7g, 26mm OBV: IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P II COS III P P, Laureate head right. REV: LIBERTAS PVBLICA S-C, Libertas standing holding pileus and sceptre. REF: RIC 100, Cohen 119. This coin is a slot filler as well but it isn't bad for a budget coin, paid $30 including shipping at the Ancient Peddlers every other Sunday. I think it may have BD, dealer says no. I haven't decided to treat the coin or not. What do you guys think? Roman Provincial Hostillian, as Caesar, AE27 of Viminacium, Moesia Superior, 250-251 AD, 12.0g, 27mm OBV: C VAL HOST M QUINTVS CAE, Bare-headed, cuirassed bust right, paludamentum visible from rear. REV: PMS COL VIM, Moesia standing facing, head left, hands outstretched over a bull and a lion, AN XII in ex. REF: Moushmov 54, Martin 4.01.14 I got a pretty decent deal on this Hostilian provincial for $25 including shipping. It's also a slot filler for Hostilian. Rhoemetalkes I. and Pythadoris 11 BC - 12 AD BASILEWS ROIMHTALKOU Heads of Rhoemetalkes I. and Pythadoris jugate r. KAISAROS SEBASTOU Head of Augustus r. 8.57 gram 24.1 mm RPC 1711. This coin I ordered for 18 Euros including shipping. I was looking for a order filler when I purchased that Hostilian but the dealer didn't have any decent coins for $20 including shipping. The coin is on it's way from Germany, I haven't received it yet. Actually my 4th year anniversary will be about November 20th which is later this month but I decided to get this post set up. I learned a lot during the time I've been collecting and I'm glad I made the switch from U.S.A. moderns to ancient coins. Don't think I'll ever go back to modern coins just because I enjoy ancient coins that much for real. I know Roman Imperials really well and many of the obscure rulers in the set. It's been a goal of mine to collect as many rulers as I can (up to 106 rulers, 51.7%). In order to fit many of these coins into my low budget I've also collected Roman Provincial coins to fill in some of the really tough to find coins. I'm just starting to get more familiar with Roman Provincial coins. I know a little about many other regions but also starting to learn more about Greek coins but it is a tough era and region to learn for most people from what I understand. I also learned how to clean or not to clean coins. I've had some success stories as well as failures that I've learned from. What to do and not to do as it goes. I spent a lot of time learning how to attribute coins. I often use online sources as a starting point. I use books as well and also look for more coins of the same type as comparisons. Also learned how to shop for coins, how to get decent deals and to avoid fake and reproduction coins. I learned a lot in these past four years and I have a long way to go but that's ok because I am really enjoying the learning process for sure. Many people are to thank here for what I've learned, if it be reading your post or a website you've made or linked here. And the willingness of some people to help whenever they can. I've made a lot of friends here which is just as important to me. I'd like to thank each and every one of you guys for sure. Thank you!! I've also nearly finished phasing out my old scanner photos. I am so happy about that and my online galleries looks so much better. Yes, I learned how to use a camera too. Some people know this and it keeps me pretty busy.
Interesting coins and congrats. My favorite is the Rhoemetalkes/Pythadoris/Augustus. In a few more months it will be 5 years since I started collecting ancients (hard to believe what I've been able to acquire in that relatively short time).
Happy anniversary, Gil! According to Hallmark, the appropriate traditional 4th anniversary gift is fruit and flowers, so here you go . Also according to Hallmark, a modern alternative is an appliance. So if you don't want the fruit basket, here's a toaster .
Yeah, you was here when I started collecting. Back when the both of us were in the beginning learning phase. It was fun back then and still is. It is amazing how many coins you can get during that time, even affordable ones. Was a surprise to find out how many you can get. Maybe too many. lol
Congrats Daryl & nice coins. I don't remember the month I started but it was around 2010 I got into it full time.
I'm definitely planning on continuing on and collecting. I might make a website in the future but I am kicking around a few ideas in my head. We'll see but no promises and it is a lot of work too.
I don't know why but I thought you were collecting longer than that, but that still is awhile and enough to gain some skill at collecting. You have a very nice collection for sure. Very nice coins.
I wasn't around here when Mat started, but I remember VK and Gil when they began their Ancients journey. Congrats to both and keep em coming.
I blame you, Bing for giving me my very first ancient coin!! lol It's all good and I am very thankful for it.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday Mr. President, happy birthday to you. Now comes the part where I pop out of the cake holding a double denarii in each hand. Just don't expect me to don a Marilyn Monroe wig.
Augustus, Macedon, Philippi, AE 19mm (Semis). 31 AD, 4.7g, 19mm OBV: VIC - AVG, Victory standing left on base holding wreath and palm. REV: COHOR PRAE PHIL, Three standards in honor of the Praetorian Guard's battle between Augustus and Marcus Antonius. REF: RPC I 1651, SGICV 32, SNG Cop 305, BMC 23, SNG ANS 677 Would you believe it. This is the coin that Bing gave me and my very first coin.
Thanks a lot, Aidan. I've seen some of your collection as well. As many of them are out of my price range, I've included them in my window shopping and browsing. Even if I can't afford them, I still like looking at coins I can't get.
Eh? I don't have a collection. Unless you're looking at my write-ups, where I do say I don't own the pieces.
