the coins are probably 'official' but the set i doubt is. it might be a set made by a third party ... so the value of the set would not be much more then the value of the coins... assuming the coins were not harmed in assmbling the set.

    Hello preagle,

Welcome to the forum. What your Grandfather has probably given you is coins that have been collected and put into albums as a set. These are generally done by mint and date and is a very common way to collect coins.

My question to you is were all of the Kennedy Halves the same or was there something that made them different like the state quarters all having a different reverse.

If they are all the same, then they are probably a collection like I mentioned in the first paragraph. If they are different (in that there is something unique on each coin) then this is post mint. Upload a picture when you can, meanwhile try to describe it in as much detail as you can remember.

    Best Regards,

    Darryl

Hmmm... Ok... Insert puzzled look...Franklins were ended in 1963, Jeffersons were from 1964 to current... Ok, ya got me... I feel like a blond, what am I missing???

Good luck with your collection! It's nice to have something passed down from your grandfather. They may or may not be worth much, but the real value is in where they came from anyways...

    Best Regards,

    Darryl

Welcome to the forum! If the date on the JFK halves is from 1965 to 1970, the coins are 40% silver. If the date is 1964, it is 90% silver. Later than 1970 and they are worth 50 cents.

Unless they are proof coins, I should add.

If they are what they sound, they might be an unc set of the 1969 coins. Not rare, but probably $10-$20. Is it just the half? Or are there other coins? BTW, Welcome to the wonderful world of coin collecting. :D

Wrong, wrong, wrong. See Post #6.

What you are talking about are US Mint produced 50¢ pieces.

What the OP has is a Franklin Mint set of silver rounds.

    NOT the same thing!

Roy,you are right about the Franklin Mint having never struck any coins or medal-coins for the U.S.A..The same thing applies to the New Zealand Mint, which has never struck a New Zealand coin or medal-coin so far.

    Aidan.

I beg to differ DJ, if post 1970 Kennedy's are unc, they will surely fetch more than face.

Thank you very very much Roy. :rolling: Next time try telling me instead of flaming me and changing my post. What I said about kennedy half dollars was 100% accurate: http://www.coinfacts.com/half_dollars/kennedy_half_dollars/kennedy_half_dollars.html.
    I just didn't see post #6.

I was talking about circulated coins. And (at least to me) they are only worth 50c even if UNC.
