1447284850361.jpg New to this but I see alot about error coins on news and mainly dimes. What do I have here??? It has a cooper ring around it, with a lip on both sides with NO ridges on it (smooth). Probably just as thick as a nickel. Should I get a professional opinion of it or just let my kid have it.

Looks like it may be a dryer coin.

Looks like they hammered the rim bigger to get a better grip when playing "coin basketball" - usually done with a nickle.

As in a coin washed in a clothes dryer???? Talking about the cooper ring I would see what your saying but I'm more interested in the raised edges sticking up a mm or 2 around the rim on both sides. Like it was misstruck. Thanks for replying.

Or somebody started to make a coin ring and saw it would be too small or too much work to make it

Yes - hammering makes it fold up like that - plus, as your pics show, the reeds on the edge are smooth.

    Spooned or hammered.
Could be a dryer coin, too. (spent a lot of time bouncing around in a clothes dryer)

    It's still a dime, though.

Thank you very much all, sounds like a kid got a dime richer.

bryantallard show me the money....so i can look through it

i found one like this and was told the same but I personally don't see how a dryer could do this. I would think that the friction of the coin hitting the edge of the tumbler would flatten it like this coin.

It couldn't possibly bounce around on its edge, right?

Get it weighed. Interesting piece anyway.

This Dime is what a dryer coin looks like. It may have been deliberately spooned by a prisoner with nothing but time - spooning resembles dryer damage - but a dryer coin almost always manifests with that raised rim. The clad copper is exposed as a result of the process - any cladding on the rim was worn away first.

Bryantallard, your coin is completely different and came to that look via some other process.

Looks like a spooned coin to me. Don't know why anyone would start one with a dime though. Much too small.
