I started out the week bidding on a Seleukid Empire tet by Demetrios II and just ended up with this instead. Now I need to buy another Abafil tray. The next collection has begun. How it ends..............I can't see that far.....it's all too blurry. MACEDON (Roman Province). Aesillas. Quaestor, circa 95-70 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 15.84 g, 11h). Uncertain mint. Head of the deified Alexander the Great right; Θ behind neck / Money chest, club, and chair; all within wreath. Bauslaugh Group VI (obv. die O58); SNG Copenhagen 1330; Dewing 1224. Good VF, toned. Ex CNG 363
Gorgeous coin! You've got as well-centered a wreath as you can get on these types. It seems the reverse die was always a smidgen larger than the flan.
Thanks. I stumbled across this one last night. I double checked dozens on acsearch, CNG research, VCoins etc in the last 12 hrs trying to better evaluate this one. The full legend on the obverse is another thing that is often incomplete. Someone tried to snipe me with 10 seconds left but I had put in a higher bid and the rest is history.
I went through this auction's list of coins three or four times and would pause and take a second look at this one each time. One of the loveliest examples of the type I've seen. Congrats on the win! And no, I'm not the one who tried to snipe you .
It is indeed a beauty and it was on my short list for this auction, but I didn't bid against you either .
To those who were looking and did not bid....thank you. Seriously. I should have bought nothing for awhile and I was in a mood where I would have chased this higher. Thank you for not making me do that. I have seen better, but this one seems pretty nice for the price. thank you for the compliments.
