It is nice that you have an Alexander the Great coin from Babylon. He planned to establish Babylon as his capital & he died there in 323 B.C. I look forward to seeing pics out of the flip along with your measurements of weight & dimension. Edit to add: I see you posted photos while I posted. I'm no expert but the coin is looking quite genuine. There is nothing wrong with you searching Dr. Ilya Prokopov's Fake Ancient Coin Reports here: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/thumbnails.php I really doubt that you will find your coin in the list but it is good to look. If you measure the weight & dimension please post it.
Woo! Congrats Sallent, coin and flips. With my other comment, I wasn't implying that you're ignorant I was just messin' with ya' (plus I'm an eagle fan, heh). All in all, starting ancients 3 days ago and being where you are now? Makin' me jealous.
I've taken even more high resolution shots of the coin than the second set of pictures I posted. I will have to wait to post them later when I get home, as I'm now at the office.
Yeah. The shots through the flip just gave it that dull, lifeless look of a cast coin, and obscured the flow lines at the top of the obverse, which you can clearly see in the second set of images.
I love the parrot comment. Every time I hear the word parrot, I think of Monty Python,"This parrot is never more, its bloody pushing up daisies.....this, is an EX parrot". Anyway, any VF Alex III tet in VF is a good buy at $300 or less. They used to be cheaper, but the slab crowd has increased demand markedly, like owls. Nice VF+ examples of both are probably a good buy right now before they go even higher.
What is that owl coin you speak of? If it is becoming expensive to get, then perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to add it to my to-get list for January once I am out of my self-imposed embargo on any further purchases. After all, why wait to get it if you can get it now for less.
Sounds expensive! Am I going to have to sell every single American coin that I have to fund my new found ancient coin addiction? I am a bankruptcy attorney, so I know all about things costing more money than one can afford. I'm going to have to find a new chapter 7 bankruptcy client just so I can get that owl coin.
Just like a tet from Alex III is a very stereotypical ancient coins, the Athenian owl is even more so. I don't even collect ancient greek and I own a couple of both of them. The owl was the world's first reserve currency really, it was THAT important in antiquity.
I can confirm two more things...1) the coin does not react to any magnets, and 2) there is a test gauge on the rim I had not noticed before, where someone a long time ago made a small cut on the rim to see if it was silver underneath, and I can confirm it indeed looks like silver. So glad they did it on the side rim where it is not distracting. I would have hated if if they had done it to Zeus or Alexander (which apparently was a common thing to do back then...cutting into the face of a coin) @IdesOfMarch01 I know, I'm not buying any more coins for the rest of the year. @Bing @John Anthony wait till I post the high resolution pictures tonight. It blows the second set I took out of the water. I'm not one to brag, but I was blown away. I'll have them up in 2-3 hours
it's a lovely coin sallent, i look forward to the new pics. the second pics you took were good...you can tell it's a sweet coin.
Here she is again. Took these pictures at a restaurant I stopped at this afternoon. The stong overhead light really makes a lot of the tiny details stand out. I don't have a coin scale (need to get one) but it is a heavy coin, but my dealer said he checked this coin out, and also gave me a reference to a certain "Muller" book -714, and matches the one at auction a member provided here, and there are no obvious telltale signs of forgery, it is real silver, and I checked the website someone provided me earlier with dozens and dozens of pictures of forgeries of this coin and mine did not appear among any of the forgeries. Therefore, for now I think based on the prima facie evidence I feel comfortable saying it is legitimate. I will say this, it is a heavy coin
It is a truly gorgeous coin. You now need to go on a sabbatical and stop buying coins until the new year.
Oh, for sure. With this and the extremely beautiful denarius of Trajan with Mars on the reverse, and the Roman Republic denarius I also have coming, I have enough to hold me out for a while. I feel like I'll be fine holding off on buying any more coins for a few months. Honestly, I am 100% satisfied with my start into ancient coins, and have no problem pacing myself going forward.
