Someone gave this to me the other night. It came in a box of coins that included anything from stamped copies of colonial coppers, worn US half dollars to 18th century swedish copper coins. It also contained this coin in a flip marked epypt. I told him I would check it out when I had a chance although it looked fake to me at the time. With a sober eye, it still looks immediately bad to me. It is 20mm in diameter, I have no weight. I don't think that matters in this case. It is non magnetic and on a metal detector it shows up mostly in the tin-lead area. Unless the metal detector was messed up and I don't believe it was. The patina does not come off with water or nail polish remover. I want to be wrong, but I believe it is a lead cast tourist copy someone bought and mislabeled as Egypt. Cash or Trash? I vote trash.
Yes, it is a cast replica. Not a bad one though. Certainly a space filler until you get the real thing.
I used to own a beautiful one of these once (never should have let it go) and could never replace it with a fake. It would simply remind me of the beauty I sold..... However, if someone wants this for some fake collection, let me know and I will send it their way. I know the owner did not want it back either way. BTW thanks for the quick delivery of the Columbian Expo Medal. It looks just like the photo.
One can get a decent one for about $250, a nice one for $500. I just sold this one for $200: As for the medal, glad you like it! I enjoyed it for a few years. As I understand it they were made in silver and nickel also, but 10 times the price. I like copper, bronze, brass.
Yes, but they are much smaller. I wanted the large portrait and that was not to be had in nickel or silver. btw my former owl..........ex F&S........ If only I could find this for $500, or $1500 or even $2,500 today. I would buy it in a snap. Until then, it is just one of those regrets I live with.
I got a private reply for the fake. It will go to a home for fakes and such. I'm sure it will be happier there amongst it kin.
Somewhere out there in the wilds of ancient collecting resides a particular Syracusian treasure that continues to haunt me: Wisht I had hit the trigger on this one when I saw it.
That certainly a beauty but I'll never buy one because I'll always want AJ's instead: Normally I don't let someone else's better coin dissuade me from purchasing a lesser example, but in this instance I probably wouldn't be happy with less and can't afford a comparable coin. The one you showed could make me change my mind though .
Once you see such unbelievably gorgeous and perfect coins, it's so hard to accept one of a lesser grade---but my budget constantly reminds me that some things will always be out of my reach......some almost infinitely so.
