Although I'm a virgin to ancient coins (well, near virgin as I did purchase that Republican denarius the other day), one coin I've always wanted was a Trajan denarius. My ancestry goes back to Spain (my user name is a clue as to what region of Spain), and I've always had a thing for the first Spanish emperor. I narrowed my target down to 3 delicious little coins of Trajan, but let's face it, being inexperienced, I knew I needed help from a pro. So I reached out to a member of this forum (I won't mention who it is unless he wants to reveal himself) and with his guidance I narrowed down my choices to this. Just paid for it, and now the waiting game begins. I can't wait to have it in my hands, so now the game of tracking my shipment anxiously as it inches ever closer to me begins. Behold our glorious Imperator Caesar Nerva Traianus in all his magnificence, and let all men tremble in the presence of the mighty God of War, Mars!
That's a very nice "second" Ancient coin. Good detail and an excellent portrait. Mars needs to don his toga if you know what I mean. Congratulations. Perhaps my favorite Trajan in my collection TRAJAN AR Denarius OBVERSE: IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P laureate, draped REVERSE: COS V P P SPQR OPTIMO PRINC – DAC CAP in ex. Dacian seated r. on pile of arms, his hands bound behind him. Struck at Rome, 103-111 AD 2.8g, 18mm RIC 96
Good to find another of Spanish descent on here (my more recent heritage is from South America). Nice coin and welcome.
Really nice looking portrait & Mars. Every letter on the flan is easy to read. It is a great coin. I hope you will post more when you receive it.
Wonderful choice for a second ancient. I actually prefer that bust type of Trajan but do not own one, nor ever got one before some others I had of his. I just have the two below. Trajan (98 - 117 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P, Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder. R: COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC, Spes walking left, flower in right, raising hem of skirt. Rome 3.5g 20mm SRCV II 3127, RIC II 127, RSC II 84 Trajan (98 - 117 A.D.) AR Tetradrachm PHOENICIA, Tyre Dated COS 5, year 15 (111 AD) O: AVTOKP KAIC NEP TPAIANOC CEB ΓEPM ∆AK, Laureate head right set on eagle standing right; club to left. R: ∆HMAPX - EΞ IE YΠAT E, laureate bust of Melqart draped in lion-skin. 24mm 13.7g Prieur 1515; BMC Phoenicia pg. 301, 15
Honestly, a lot of the credit goes to a well known member of this forum, for without his experience and discerning eye I would have probably bought a coin not half as good for a higher price. I just don't want to mention names unless he cares to step forwards...but a million thanks to him for his help.
A very nice example of his (Trajan). Congratulations. As you can see by my 'Avatar', I like anything that has anything to do with the great man. P.S. No Spanish in me, unless 'Sangria' counts?
I don't mind at all if you mention my name. I'm happy to have helped you find a really fantastic example of a denarius of one of my favorite emperors. All of the ones you were considering were nice but this one takes the cake by far and I have to admit I'm a bit envious myself
