US Commemorative Coins: Should one get classics, modern, or none?

I have a 1926 Sesquicentennial half, cool design but the mint unfortunately minted them in extremely low relief. Still I like it. I'd really like to get the 1915 PanPac half, that one is in my opinion the greatest US coin design ever.

I am also very tempted to get the 1915 PanPac half, too. I also put it right up there near or at the top of my favorite designs. Should I buy one for my type set??? Pray tell!

I've got one but I'm not satisfied with it. I bought on the thrill and received an OK coin, but not one that I'm really happy with. When buying, don't just grab the first thing that you see. Think it out. In the case of my PanPac, I bought it raw........shame on me and my exuberance, the coin has had an obvious cleaning which I overlooked. Also, an unsightly sock to the jaw of Columbia........Choose wisely OP. How come there's never enough time to do the job right but always time to do it over? Spare yourself.......

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg I love the pan pac half here's mine. I bought a real nice one. I know not everyone can afford this but I've seen some nice au 58 ones with nice surfaces and toning out there

This coin is definitely worthy of being posted in the "coin porn" thread.

Yeah, that little back side sure borders on obscenity, just like that type 1 standing lib. quarter. Ha, ha!

I could not resist the desire to get a PanPac half, so I just bought a PCGS AU58 from L & C coins over the phone for $490. I will have to wait now until it arrives to see how it looks.

I just received my Panama Pacific half dollar, and it looks really nice, except I noticed the weird looking edge on both the reverse and obverse. Why were these coins made that way?

Buy coins you like - coins you're enthused about. The classic commems can be a strain pricewise for some of us but over time most can acquire a nice number of attractive coins. I have a couple of the scarcer ones in the EF grade range but I am happy with them. As has been said, prices have cycled down quite a bit from where they have been. I happen to have two Roanokes right now, I just like the design with Raleigh on the obverse and the infant Virginia Dare on the reverse.....should sell one but......

Hard to stay away from the classics. So many nice designs. Ive been searching for a 36 Bridgeport and a Albany that fits my collection for a while. Love the reverse.

That San Diego half is in the top 5 best classic designs in my view. It is so amazing to see commems as heavily worn as that Stone Mountain Georgia, especially in a slab! Ha, ha!
