1868 shield nickel variety grade and value helpI

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Eagles n Indians, Feb 9, 2015.

  1. Been waiting for this coin and a few others since December 29th. They came from great Britain and got lost in customs in New York but finally came today. I am pretty much clueless about shield nickels. It's an overdate for sure and the bottom of the shield is doubled. There is also a nice cud on the reverse around 1:30. Not sure if this is common or not. Thanks

    definitely not an overdate.

    Possibly a repunched date

And a die crack at the date? Were the dates on these always that high and touching on the bottom of the shield?

  6. i think there is over 100 varieties for 1868 alone.

Nice 68 rpd shield nickel . I give it an xf . With the rpd value around $100.00 so many varieties in shields to little collectors .
That's a shame as shield nickels are really fun to collect.

Looking through old posts about shield nickels...

The coin in question here is strike doubled and not an RPD.
