Hi all, I have been puzzling over this coin recently, and am leaning toward replica, but I wondered if any of you have come across one before. Most of you will immediately identify it as an Italy 1928R 20 lire. However, it is well overweight at 20.5g when the originals weigh in at 15g. It is the correct width, and does not stick to a magnet. It doesn't look quite right either, and I would be interested if anyone had an answer. Don't worry about disappointing me, I'm not worried about value as it was more or less free, but I am interested that I can't seem to find any more info on it, and thought this might be the place to ask- you guys are a fountain of knowledge and have really helped to educate me on a wide variety of subjects. Many thanks for your time, I am grateful for it. Best Wishes!
If genuine, It may be a pattern type coin. These are often heavier and well struck. I see no data on it though. As yet!
I was hoping for something like that. I can find info that there were trial strikes done of this coin, but no images or data to confirm. So it doesn't immediately shout 'fake' at you then?
Well yes, It does not match (for example) the rope-like border on the reverse, this one shows little notches, as opposed to a continuios twine of the genuine ripe-like border. If asked, I would say not genuine. But who am I?
I would agree with you, and also would like to thank you for your time and knowledge- I just thought I ought to check before disposing of it in a silly manner! I lean toward modern 'fantasy' (at best, deceptive counterfeit at worst. Grrr... them pesky counterfeiters). Many thanks for putting my mind at rest.
