It's very cool, and Mr. Whitten is certainly correct that noted rotations can bring higher premiums, but I'm not so sure this is one wold be a candidate with any real upside when all was said and done. If I did though, let's just say it would go for a little swim first, but that's just me.
First - NICE. Second - 1861 3cs with Medallic Alignment are QUITE common, both attributed and unattributed. There is a premium, but it's a small one, on the order of 10-15%. Now you will see lots for sale on eBay at moon-money premiums, but they don't sell to people who know what they are buying. Liz (JJTP's major buyer) is one of the sharpest out there. She knows what it's worth and will not over pay (I've watched her several times in dealer-to-dealer transactions). As a result, in general their prices are quite fair. One of the pieces in my 3cs grade set came from them, along with a couple pieces for my main circulated coin set.
The TPGs are just market graders of commodities. One can't expect them to know if a coin is upside-down.
I know (recognized the label - heck it SAYS JJ Teaparty) Price sounds pretty good to me. Retail is around 190-195 for an AU55, PCGS price guide (for whatever that's worth) has it at $200. I bought mine raw two years ago (XF40) for $93. Then had to send it in to NGC twice to get it properly attributed...
I agree that a new slab would not be worth the cost but I'm lost on taking a swim. I took it as giving the coin a dip.
Duh. Yeah. Guess I was too focused on the coin ;-) Greysheet ask was $165 IN August. Thanks for the #'s from the other sources.
There's nothing with that coin that acetone would help and an acid dip would destroy the patina which is what makes it so special with just the tiniest little bit of wear on the highest points...
My apologies for the confusion... I didn't think anyone would assume I would suggest a chem dip for circ silver, but apparently it read other than intended.
I do this with most coins I send in. Great way to knock the dust off. I wish the TPGs would do it but I'm sure that would really slow things down.
