I was charmed by the detail on this coin for its size - 13mm. Not knowing the type, I was afraid I had overpaid, but on searching it, I did ok. Not a bargain, but I'm satisfied. I love the sharp little altar of Isis and the chiseled bust of Apollo. This is Laodicea ad Lycum, Phrygia, Pseudo-Autonomous, temp Tiberius... So having had nothing of Isis in my collection, in one fell swoop I acquired two very nice coins.
Very attractive Isis coins! At the one coin show I've attended I felt handicapped regarding prices. Cell signal and wifi were spotty. Usually I jump online and search for comps before any purchase but I wasn't able to do so in many instances. I definitely overpaid for many coins purchased that week and probably would have held out for better examples of some. However, it was my one big coin show/vacation and I'm trying to think of it as an entertainment expense.
You can't buy every coin you want at a discount. The reason I waited a few years on the Antiochos was not price, but grade. I did get a handful of nice bargains at the show, so felt perfectly willing to buy a few at full retail. I got both of these from Tom Wood (Ephesus) - he always has coins I want because he specializes in Levantine. The only spending regret I had at Baltimore was the $13 crab cake sandwich. It was good to be sure, but not $13 good, lol. Note to self: next time bring tuna fish sandwich in bag.
My one and only Isis coin. PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy V Epiphanes. Æ Tetrobol 27mm, Alexandreia mint. Struck circa 197-183/2 BC. Wreathed and draped bust of Isis right Eagle standing left on thunderbolt. Svoronos 1234; Weiser 130; SNG Copenhagen 247
My only and not very good Phrygia, Laodikeia Coin: Bronze LAODIKEWN - Laureate head of Apollo right; lyre before PUQHS PUQOU - to left and right of serpent-entwined altar, surmounted by headdress of Isis. Mint: Laodicea ad Lycum (AD 14-37 Time of Tib) Wt./Size/Axis: 3.13g / 15mm / - References: BMC 61. SNG von Aulock 3806 SNG Copenhagen 510 RPC 2903
I've never been hungry enough to eat at Baltimore. This time, Marcella gave me a chocolate bar but I did not open it until the bus ride home. There are good places to eat over at the Inner Harbor but I don't go their carrying coins/cash.
JA => I'm really liking your cool Baltimore scores (good job, stud) I like both of those lil' AE Isis examples ... Oh, and that was a fantastic Isis example tossed-in by JBG (nice!!) Ummm, I have one to add as well ... oh, but this Batman example didn't win any BOT competitions!! (I think JBG has this baby all sewn-up?!) Ptolemy V AE26 Date: 204-180 BC Diameter: 26.3 mm. Weight: 16.5 gr. Obverse: Wreathed and draped bust of Isis. Reverse: Eagle standing on thunderbolt ... gawd, but I still love this coin (these PT examples are all so cool, eh?) great coin-fabric => big-n-chunky-n-funky!!
