I really want to and drool over all the ancients posted, I just don't know where to start, my dealer doesn't sell any and I am really want to buy one. I'm going to a show on Friday, maybe it's time I'm just scared of fakes.
Vcoins.com is a good place to start for beginners. Some of the prices are a little high(it's all retail dealers) but lots of authentic coins and good dealers on there. The "For Sale" forum on here is a good place as well. Ancients are posted fairly regularly.
How it worked for me, bought my first one here after admiring others on here, then it arrived and I was hooked. Havent looked back since & I still have the coin and refuse to ever part with it, not even for a Caesar portrait coin.
Nice pic of your piece coinman. Since we're sharing; met Bing in person and was turned to the Dark Side.
Bing does have that effect on people...Steve used to be the shy, retiring type until he met DER BING!!!
Now this is a thread for me, here is my only one. Pruta, Alexander Jannaeus, 102 B.C. Only got it because it came with a stamps lot, it was an excellent deal. Any comments on grade and value would be appreciated.
Those little prutot are rarely well centered or well struck. Yours looks quite nice, comparatively! I think it may be from John Hyrkanos I (Yehohanan) rather than Alexander Jannaeus though. Disclaimer: I know very little about these. I'll find a link for you and post it momentarily. I'm probably wrong and was basing the above on quick comparisons with a few coins in CNG's archives.
I like the ancient counterfeits, imitations, barbarous, etc ... they're double cool!! congrats on scoring your first ancient counterfeit!! => see, it's easy => even when they're fakes, they're fricken awesome!!
I didn't do anything. Honest Ma, let go my ear. Ouch. Welcome coinman 123. Go to the show and handle a few. I don't know your budget concerns, but I'll bet there will be plenty in everyone's price range. What show are you attending? Some of the smaller shows do not have many Ancients. We'll wait on your report. Taxidermist: I do not collect these, but this one could make me start. Very nice for the type.
Strip flans have always fascinated me. Lovely piece Tax. NGC does not guarantee that their coins are authentic though...
