I was recently contacted by Howard Spindel about a shield nickel I own potentially being of a new DDO variety previously not known.

Here are some photos I am submitting to Howard and I will update this thread with info as I get it involving this discovery!

Wow--nice doubling, even I can see that! :D
I think I also see evidence of a repunched date?

Yes good eye... repunched date as well! Paddy54 will be able to elaborate more on the intricacies of this new variety, I am a newbie in this area!

I received this from Howard this morning:

"It is unusual for a DDO that shows strong doubling at the annulet to also show such strong doubling at the motto. Really a nifty variety. The doubling around the star on the reverse is Longacre doubling, not a DDR. The broken letters in STATES and UNITED are common, and result from broken working hubs. The RPD looks to have a clockwise tilt, with the 1 north and 869 south."

He gave me the ok to post it so I thought I would share!

All of the above is great news as I thought it would work out to be. What is the icing on the cake is ....all that plus the reverse hub is that of the llc. No others are known like this specimen with that reverse ,and dated, 1869 wide date , that an DDO plus a RPD. This is truly a discovery piece .

Just an MS66 with CAC is a great coin. This one in an old holder is a great coin.

This is true! Pretty cool pedigree too, was previously owned by Bob Shippee in his Waccabuc Collection US Type Set... and it's described/pictured in his book. Although he wasn't aware it's a undiscovered variety, at least not that I know of. Bobs book is called:

Pleasure & Profit: 100 Lessons for Building and Selling a Collection of Rare Coins

I've read it, pretty good read, and good tips for buying coins and building a set, regardless of series. He certainly has a good eye for coins!

I think these coins are beautiful anyway, but with the discovery & 66+CAC, I have no words. Exceptional!! Maybe that'll do. Lol!

A very nice variety and in a phenomenal grade to boot! I used to have an 1870 with similar doubling on the motto.

Very nice, and nicely-illustrated. You didn't leave anything to the imagination on that one. :)
