Looking at this coin. What does everyone think about it? I personally think it's real. But I want to make sure before I pick up this key date. It looks to be in around VF/XF shape, so about average for this date.
I'll let you know what I think as soon as I receive it. Thanks for the heads up that it was for sale. Just kidding.
Nothing jumps out (to me) that raises a red flag. I'm familiar with Aussie grading, and I think this is more aVF--quite a bit of wear on the portrait and back of the 'roo. The corrosion should be taken into consideration as well. --just one opinion.
Is the corrosion the black stuff or are we talking about the white inside the D in IND.? I know a lot of aussie pennies have this problem, I think due to the humidty Australia has. I've dug through hundreds of these coins and so many have corrosion. I just don't know what to do to stop it/slow it down. I should also mention that I live in a very dry environment so that should help to slow down corrosion.
The most concerning spot is the dark one of the base of the portrait. I have perhaps a hundred or so old Aussie pennies--those in the 40s which I consider relatively "problem-free" circulated pieces have deeper brown color w/o discoloration. Those I have in the XF-AU grade have a lot of remaining luster in the legends. The flatness/lightness of the coin overall suggests it might be dipped to reduce the darker spot. Anyway--not to rag on your coin as much as point out a few things. If you haven't bought it yet, I would consider the spots as grounds to adjust your offer price--down a few notches. You're fortunate to live in an arid climate--I don't and I have to watch out for "bronze disease" on my older coins.
I haven't bought it yet. But those are some strong arguments. I have about a hundred of these as well haha (I'm only missing about 6 coins for the complete set). I'm hoping to get it for a decent price, I'm alright with its condition but if I win it I'll watch those spots to make sure they don't get any bigger. The dry climate helps a lot.
Yeah--I'm surprised nobody tried to snipe it--it looks real to me, so that's at least a $50 coin in Australia, I think.
Sounds about right. But the US dollar to australian dollar ratio, $50 AUD ends up being about $20 haha. I'm happy though. I believe its real as well.
I accounted for the exchange rate too. Here's the Macca's (Aussie catalogue) values from 2010 in US dollars--probably higher now: vg $38 f $63 vf $112
Yea, but this one has some corrosion it looks like. I'm happy though. You finished with your set yet? minus the 1930 of course.
No, I have a lot of irons in the fire as far as collections go and I haven't been working on Australia much.
