Looking for some input on this cent. I purchased this as a 09S over horizontal S. The grade as stated by the dealer XF. I have looked in "The Cherrypickers Guide" and seem to think it looks like Breen#2058/FS#1-012.3. I am still learning so bear with me if I screwed that up. I struggled to get a clear picture of just the date/mint mark area. Hopefully this wonderful group will be able to help clear up two facts. Is it actually a 09 S over horizontal S? What is the consensus of the actual grade? Thank you
If you could get a closer more focused image on the mint mark would be great, but there is definately something going on,it's a cool 1909 anyway.
I have tried all week to get a picture that would be worthy, this was the closest i could get. I guess i will need to invest in a different camera.
Search "Magnifying Glass" on Google Play or the Apple Store depending on what kind of photo you have. I used to use that to take photos and it works great.
Hey we do what we can with what we have, the crazy set up's i have tried in the past to get a decent picture would put NASA's Hubble telescope to shame. with one slight difference, they were successful and I am still trying.
Otherwise known as the 1909-S over the horizontal S, a repunched mintmark - Coneca; RPM-001. Nice pick-up Garry.
It looks like you got it. I'll say it grades maybe high VF to low EF. The washed out L in LIBERTY is caused by grease and in my opinion will probably negatively affect the price.
Thank you, would that be considered a secondary diagnostic to this S over horizontal S? Is there a link you know of explaining the grease aspect of the minting process?
I don't think so, Garry. It took time for the grease to build up in the L, or it may have happened suddenly, but that's an independent event from when this mint mark was struck-over, so, in any event, it's not a diagnostic for all these. Does that make sense?
I'm cautiously optimistic about the variety but less optimistic about the seller's grade. VF30-35 is more like it, and figure a street value in an attributed slab of ~$150.
Thanks SuperDave, I have those same feelings, the more I look at this. I am just going to bite the bullet and send it in and see what mood PCGS is in.
Lol. I think the TPGs ought to call market grading mood grading because that's what it is when they're doing it. On Monday, that pretty surface gets a half-point bump in the grade. On Tuesday, they're not impressed. Wednesday, it looks funny, it's questionable color. Ooh, how does this work?
