What happens when the discussion of coins goes astray? Well currently the thread is locked and nobody can continue in that line of discussion.

As one of our moderators has recently noticed and many more in the past have experienced as well, the whole flow and synchronisity of a thread can be shattered by one purposefully or accidentally interjected OT comment. I would suggest that instead of locking a thread that so many have contributed too, the moderator send a message to the party who posted the OT post.

It's not the fault of the thread starter or it's legitimate contributants. It's the individual who posted the post. Why punish many for one's infractions, be them accidental or otherwise.

i 'think i saw the thread you mentioned, but it wasnt locked - a polite warning was made that i could be locked. a private warning would do the trick, but a open warning such as the one made serves to warn us all to stay close to the topic and keep certain chatter restricted to the right forum. a private warnign might result is more frequent warnings since fewer people would be reminded by such warnings....

i doubt it, the modorators are not like that ... they know they are human, and i think they can take questions about their actions. Although i have never seen any of our mods do anything that i would consider 'out of line' - i do keep in mind that whay they do for us here, they do out of love for the hobby we all enjoy and love - and they dont get paid! As a whole, i think the people on this forum, mods included, are most always friendly! there are a few that need to re-asses why they are really here, and reavaluate their learning curve scince it seems they will never... :) But the mods are always friendly and fair IMHO

Keep in mind i dont frequent other forums becuase for the most part they are not friendly and overly helpfull, again IMHO .. so i do not have another forum to compare cointalk to on a regular basis .. but my gut feeling is that the cointalk mods are fair (meaning not always right, but they do try :) )

^^^ I agree 101%, I was simply posting an alternative corrective action. In the past I've had threads (a contest comes to mind) get canx'd because of wild-cat posts by other members questionable OT posts. They didn't bother me, but a moderator was on top of them...

You should also keep in mind that not all members can be contacted privately, even by the moderators. So sometimes even if the mod wishes to make a private contact they cannot.

I think the way the moderators are handling the OTs is perfectly okay.
    It doesn't offend me...

This is the type of thread that I like---it gives us, the Moderators, feedback on what the members are thinking.

On the thread I think you are talking about I was the Mod. that posted....the reason for posting and not just PM'ing the member was this---if I had PM'ed the last poster, someone would have come next, seen the last post...not known about my request to keep on topic and posted another off topic post, so I PM that person, so on and so forth untill the thread has gotten sooo heated that the thread is locked.

This way everyone can see the request---know to get back on topic---and no need to lock the thread.

As Doug posted---not all members let PM's come to them---they have them blocked and most of the time I just don't want to email a poster and give them my email address...if they got mad at me...I could get put on a LOT of spam listings :D :D

With all of that said--keep the feedback coming---the Moderators are just members like ya'll and we all run by the same rules, and sometimes we need a kick too ;)
