1970 s Lincoln cent which looks like it may have doubling in the date and mint mark also looks like some of the letters in "liberty" and " in God we trust" ? I don't think it's machine doubled because the doubling isn't lower, flat and shelf like. What do you think? Did I get lucky or another dud? I changed my filter to black and grey to hopefully help onlooking eyes. Positive posts welcome in not looking for negativity. Thanks!
Sorry to burst your bubble. It is machine doubling. A doubled mintmark is the first tell tale sign of machine doubling. A die has the mintmark added after it is produced. A true doubled die would show doubling on the devices and portrait and no doubling on any mintmark present. Now a doubled die can have a repunched mintmark. The next thing about the doubling present in the images is they are flat and shelf like. A true doubled die would mimic the slight roundness of the devices as well as have notching near the ends of letters or numbers. It is a pretty cool doubling though..
Trust me when we say you will know if you have one of the big DDs. You will not even need to question it.You will be asking yourself if you are drunk instead lol. This is a example of a 1970-s DD.
The mint mark in your example jdiablo30 is doubled though, how is that? (Not arguing that mine is a true doubled die because it more than likely isn't.
The mint mark is not doubled. The MM is added after the die is made(this is when the doubling occurs). So if your MM shows doubling it is machine doubling. You can see that by the way the numbers have a shelf like appearance. They two steps. True doubling will be rounded everywhere and not shelf like.
It's ok I read this page on doubling that I hadn't read before (surprisingly) and it had great examples and description! I hopefully won't have this problem again thanks
