Hi ! Chris, Thanks for the compliment. Just to clarify; I am not into DD's or much of any other varieties. I was just curious because I thought I was seeing double. Could just be old age ??? Dave
Hi Ken, I was sooooo sure I had a million dollar coin :>). These tired old eyes see doubling on the date & lettering on the obverse, but since I see it on the reverse too, it could be because the photo was looking through the plastic holder. Dave
Hi bwdul, Walking liberties are my favorite Half's, but I have taken a liking to the Franklin's. I have read in various articles and books that MS65 & up coins are what one should strive for and to get rid of everything else. I find this is good advice for modern coins (1965 and up), but I don't think I will ever get rid of my old type coins AG to AU. Dave
That is exactly my point! I don't feel they should be listed either. So, why should other attribution websites mislead people into believing they are important enough to charge for their authentication? Chris
Pcgs has been taking off, or will not put on the slab Jefferson nickel to grade under the cherry-pickers guide . Not sure which Jefferson nickels either .
Chris,Mojavedave , I am curious about what grade and type us coins do you seniors and well versed collectors recommend to the newer members and collectors of the world? If budget is say, 250 a month?
IMHO If you are a collector as a numismatic hobby than I would suggest MS & PR65 grades and up. Nothing lower in grade unless you are interested in old type coins. Than, buy the best grades you can afford. Get yourself a grade book or buy graded slabs until you feel comfortable of your own grading. If you are into coins as an investment, I would suggest ASE's for bullion silver. The current price of $15.36 an oz is very appealing, however it can go up or down. I remember when silver was less than $5.00 oz back in the 70's, I also remember when gold came back on the market at $32.00 an oz. Most people were hesitate to pay that high of a price, but look at gold now. So bwdul, you can see there are a lot of variables whether you collect silver or gold. The best type of coins for you, are what most type appeals to you. You will be happy you bought what you like. Stay tuned for Chris for I am sure he is more knowledgeable about the coin industry and hobby than most, although there are several others on this site that are true experts in this field. Glad you are aboard and read-read read. Dave
"Some" collectors, want an example or at least the very best example of each listed die variety that exists for a particular coin series. Regardless of how minor it may appear. It is simply their collecting goal. I can understand this.
Thanks for the replies..Without having forums like this it would be very difficult to get straight answers and you would just be buying aimlessly, which makes no sense. The money thats required to even put together a respectable set of older us coins is more than the average citizen can afford. Is there any sites you guys recommend that offers fair pricing on quality us coins?
Hi bwdul, I know a lot of people will chastise me for saying this, but E-Bay is a good way to go. I saw a 1962 MS65 Proof Franklin go for 9.95 last night. You can't even slab one yourself for that price. I tried to bid, but my computer froze up when I made a bid. (Not responding). Boy, is that ever aggravating. Dave
O man II would love to see more of those auctions.Yea i must admit I do look all the time.Your pc froze at the wrong time bro.BwDuL
What I like to see is member being told in a nice way to post their images on the full mode. As a variety collector yes I am interested in new finds, however some of these new finding are just silly. Yes if they are legitimate finds but some are just splitting hairs. But again don't come in the forum and expect answers to poor or no photos. Asking what it worth ???....when my answer to that question is what ever someone is willing to pay! And that goes for any material item what so ever. We all have to remember that most of the questions we consider dumb or stupid are from people whom either are newbies or someone who has obtained an item from an estate. If there is a legitimate question we as collectors owe it to our hobby to give legitimate answers. I do understand as I have read some very crazy post how you could feel it's a waste of my time. I can only share this ....what should one say whom has nothing to say..? NOTHING! Just pass up the post and don't allow it to make you blow a major gasket.
I understand thanks, one question I'm on my second book from Scott Travers now is this considered a guy who just sells books or is he highly regarded in the numismatics field?
