I have picked up better quality coins out of circulation (not 1939's though), but I am wondering why this coin is now at $ 52.00 on E-Bay. It is ad as an AU, but it sure has a lot of hits on the obverse. Am I missing something ? Dave
Lots of distracting stuff on the obverse Dave, and some small hits on the reverse. Might go AU as I see no major rubs........
1.) If you had posted this as a guess the grade, plenty of people would (probably) have said UNC. 2.) The cleaning has made it just shiny enough to look nicer in these pics than it really is.
As would any self-respecting knowledgeable buyer. It has clearly been polished. However, that doesn't describe the vast majority of Ebay buyers (as Chris likes to call them "bidiots).
Numismedia AU 58 money is just north of $60. However this coin is far from AU 58. There is major wear and even flatness on all the high points of the coin. The eagle's breast feather detail is almost all gone. On the obverse all the high points of the hair are worn flat. At best this would be an AU 50 technically, but I'm wth you @Mojavedave I think it would be body bagged for the cleaning.
Maybe one bididot and one shill bidder... I can pretty much say if you're selling an item and it has no bid all it takes is one bid to spark others into bidding. Time and time again I've seen items hours before it close under bid or no bids . Then the next thing you know all heck breaks loose before the item closes.
