Searchin rolls I came upon a 1984p half with a severe broadstrike. There's a 1979 on ebay now for $195! I am too stupid to shrink pictures. But as soon as I take some I'll put it as my avatar.
dont shrink it so much... if you can fit it as an avatar, which is aorund 15kb's ( i think) then get it to around 100 kb's.. cointalk will allow uploads of 100kb or less... at that size, we will be able to see details
That's all Greek to me. I never touched a computer until well over the age of 50. My 11 year old grandaughter knows more than I do. Anyway here is my new avatar. I'll try taking a better shot later. Why do I have no trouble posting pics on ebay but run into so much hassle here on CT? Why can't this forum use a better program to accept normal pictures? Never mind, I won't understand the answer ayway!
Go to www.irfanview.com, download it, install it, and open the coin photo with it. Then go to the dropdown list near the top of the page that says Image. Then click on Resize/resample. In the window that opens, go to the bottom left corner and select resample (instead of resize) and Lanczos filter. Then go to the spot that says set new size and resize it to a size that suits what you are doing (trial and error on this one...it's easier to figure out the proper size by yourself). To make sure that the image is being displayed in irfanview at the correct size, go to the dropdown list that says view and then to display options. Click on do not fit anything. This will display the image at it's new size. Good luck!
You can do it on ebay because ebay re-sizes the pictures for you. It's not the program that limits the size of pictures, it's the site owner. He does this for two reasons, because of storage space and to keep the loading time for pages to a minimum. If he allowed large pictures to be attached then those with dial up connections would have a very hard time accessing the site. Now, that being said, you can use the Coin Talk Gallery to upload pictures of any size.
******************************* Thanks for that info. It helps to understand what's going on. However my brain has a pea sized area that controls the computer/photo department. I doubt if I will try to do anything but change my avatar frequently. That I can do. Anyway I took the broadstrike to a coin show today and showed a few dealers. All confirmed it was a genuine broadstruck Kennedy. I was offered $40 for it which I declined.
Thanks Jos I'll be sending more pics tomorrow. Also pics of the obverse and very interesting photo of the paper wrapper with a bulge where they forced the coin into the roll! Why didn't someone pull this coin out of circulation? It's been out there since 1984. Thanks, Victor
Companies like Brinks and CWI actually sort the rejects that their equipment cannot wrap because they know it's a gold mine for valuable error coins. This is amazing that you found this searching rolls and probably the only reason you found it was because it was hand rolled. Unbelievable that someone hand rolled that and cashed it in at face value. I always assumed that the best I would find searching rolls was partial collar broadstikes (found 3 so far), but you've given me new hope.
Hats off to Jos Well Jos has offered to post pics of the 1984P broadstruck Kennedy found in roll searching May 12, 2007. A sincere thank you sir! My comments are as follows: Whomever she/he was that hand wrapped these rolls obviously had to have known they were forcing this oversized coin into the roll. I mean look at the giant bulge, how could they miss that? It was done recently because this small town bank stamps the date the roll was packed right on the paper. It was packed on March 01, 2007 and the initials HJJ are also stamped on the wrapper. I have further comments that I will post later in the roll searching section of the general forum. I believe I have some helpful strategy for the benefit of all collectors who look through rolls. Thanks to all you fine folks and special THANKS to Jos.
My feeling is the small town bank employees hand wrap the rolls. Not an outside individual. The date stamp is the same. The initials stamps are different according to which employee wraps that day. The brown paper wrappers are all the same, no matter what day, month, year you go there. They are always brown, never different.
No problem Victor. It's very little work, if you know how, but that's in everything the case Here are the close ups. Regards, Jos
strategy searching Thanks again Jos. For my comments on roll searching with a strategy please visit post #45 of the thread "Don't let anyone tell you there's no SILVER left out there". Like everything else I ever attacked like: Chess {I love to play chess} Contract bridge, Casinos, Roulette, Drag Racing, fast cars, Business, Work, Love, Life, etc; AND everything you ever attacked, (horses, lotto, sports, gambling, investing) it pays to narrow the odds with some strategy. So this about sums it up for now. And again thank you to all you collectors out there. And I will now be changing my avatar .. LOL
