Thanks Ken. Did some Googling and found the following images of plating blisters, but nothing that remotely resembles a perfectly struck "o." 2 Questions: 1. Have you ever seen a burst plating blister that looks like a perfectly struck letter "o?" 2. Do we know for a fact that this coin: a 1985 D penny with a subscript letter "o" was never struck by the mint? Thanks again for helping me close the case on this thing.
1) Yes. 2) Yes: what would be the point of such a coin? In order for this coin to be struck, someone would have needed to create a die with that design feature...if someone didn't engrave that single die by hand, that means a working hub would need to have that design element, which means a master die would have that design element, which means that there would be many millions of coins struck with this feature...that is simply not the case. And without documentation by the mint that such a coin was ever created, I think the theory is a bit silly.
Fair enough, I think you have some really good points. I was just recalling to mind a few cases where single digit mintage actually does exist for some struck pennies...which have fetched up to $1M. I really appreciate your response; again, very good points. FireTide Seattle, WA
