Many think 'blah' but I think nah......Picked up a set (date) of 'em and am planning on completing the total run in in high/semi high grade PCGS.....just like my Bookers. I've loved 'em since I was a lad. Feel free to grade 'em too. Let's see how close you come to what the all saying, all knowing, Gods at PCGS grade them. devil.gif DSC_1075-horz.jpg DSC_1077-horz.jpg DSC_1079-horz.jpg

Hi Ken, Sorry I couldn't resist - Here is my George Washington Carver - she always got us home safe. :)

Very nice coins, I'm sure they are all mid to high MS coins!

I bet he was a great improvement over that captured U-Boat they have at the Science and Industry in Chicago . I'm always amazed at the living conditions in that boat every time I go to see it . Thanks for your service Darryl .

No comparison, there was tons of space by comparison. Thanks! :) Now back to those beautiful coins - Cannot wait to see the grades and compare the grade to the coin.

In teaching I have several times asked African-American students if they knew there was a US coin with a black person on it, and were amazed when I showed them the Washington/Carver and the BTWashington coins.

Why the affinity for this commem? I don't have one. I have some other classic commems, but not this one. I rarely look at them on auction listings.

I'd like to get your thinking about putting together this set? I'm very interested in your reasoning. I'm thinking I'm missing something and that's why I ask.

You are correct in your assessments, Joe......I am putting together a mid to high grade set of these (along with the Booker T's). Why? First off, it's doable. Many of these coins can be had in high grade at fairly reasonable prices. Secondly, many of the years in question are low mintage so I may see some price appreciation in the future if this series ever catches fire down the road.......what we need are more Afro/American collectors for that to happen though. :) Thirdly, it's a group of coins that I've admired since I was a lad.......I've always liked that USA superimposed over the map of the United States. One further note...... at the time these were coins were minted there was a tremendous fear of communism in this country......McCarthyism was rampant in the early fifties. Both Bookers and Carver/Washingtons were minted in an effort to oppose (from the profits) the spread of communism among black peoples in the interest of national defense.
