Besides Doug, I may be the only other collector on this site intentionally assembling an LRB mint set, and it happens to be of these 2-and-2 types of Constans. They are all scarce to rare for this emperor... I'm about to fill the Trier hole when this coin arrives...
They are extremely common coins. There have been quite a few hoards full of nicer examples found over the years.
You know, all of these would go nicely in my military collection. I'll photo bomb this thread later and hope to reply to Doug's question.
Mine from Trier. Constantine II (Caesar) Coin: Bronze Follis CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C - laureate, cuirassed bust right GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS - two soldiers holding spears and shields with two standards between them with thin pointed banners. Exergue: Mint: Trier (330-335 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 2.04g / 18mm / - References: RIC VII Trier 539
Close but it's a bit more than that, it's an unrecorded issue that should have its own RIC number were it to be recorded, between RIC VIII Cyzicus 5 and 8. The head dress - the plain ladder-shaped diadem with no other ornamentation is unrecorded in RIC.
There are overwhelming coins of these nummis across numismatic stories and they can be purchased very cheap comparing to other. I bought mine Constantines from 10Euro to 17Euro: Constantine II from Siscia Constans from Siscia Constantius II from Thessalonica
Yes, they are as common as the dirt in which they were found. But finding extraordinarily well struck and detailed are not so common.
Nice high grade coin. It is easy to understand why you liked it. I don't have a high grade Constantine II. I've always liked this one is my small collection. This is a Constantine I right? I used to have a high grade Constantine I MANVS DEI but my friend really liked it so he received it as a Christmas gift last year.
Hello Collect89. I believe that it IS a Constantine. (It could be Constantine I. RIC VII Antioch 86.) and it is a VERY nice coin. Boy, you treat your friends well. Not looking for any more right now? (Lol)
Some really nice LRB*'s here, well struck and centered, with full legends and details. Not uncirculated or MS grade, but best described for ancient coins as 'As Struck'. *I am an Australian: not Little River Band a very well known Australian pop music group.
Welcome, Davo. A small technical point - You may have to be careful saying things like that. The little River Band USED to be a famous Australian rock band, and in Glenn's mind they still are, but the fact is that ALL of the members of that band now are American, so technically, some think that it is an American rock band, (including the courts). (P.C. gone stupid in my books.)
