He didn't make thousands of bucks. He had thousands of bucks in one form of currency (which is hard to use), and converted that into thousands of bucks in an easier to use form.

I'm really not sure why this story is getting so much press - that is a very small hoard of worthless cents, comparatively. Dude saved pennies for 50 years and that's all he had to show for it.

Heck, $5k in Cents is a couple normal years for a dedicated roll searcher.
