Too funny. The Amazon listing has Newman's name misspelled. So does the title of this thread, which I assume you copy/pasted from the Amazon site.

I do not have the book, but I'll bet it has some good info. My thoughts are solely based on the rep of the author.

My thoughts are, anything numismatic which comes out of Eric Newman's mouth is worth paying money to hear. Except he's in the process of putting all of his life's work online for free....

I have this book. You'll note that Eric Newman is not the author, but rather the editor, and that it is not a traditional book but rather a compilation of essays on various topics within colonial numismatics. The essays are extremely well done and a number of them are fundamental reading in the field which they concern. Among the authors are Walter Breen, Richard Picker, Richard Doty, John McCusker, Ken Bressett, Don Taxay, and Eric Newman.

They're both excellent books, but they are very different. For someone who is just beginning out in colonial numismatics, I would strongly recommend Bower's Colonial Encyclopedia. Not only does the book have good detail for each of the series it describes, but it catalogs most of the varieties as well - which is an integral part of colonial coins.

Studies on Money in Early America is more specialized and would probably be difficult for numismatics who aren't familiar with the basics.

As stated both are good books. If you are only getting one, get the Whitman Encyclopedia. It covers a much broader area of Colonial coins. Studies on Money in Early America has a good overview of foreign circulating coinage as well as money substitutes, and some more in depth information on a few areas, French colonial coins, Elephant tokens colonial currency as well as a few others. Some of the information is quite dated more recent studies have added a lot to what is known about the coins.
