looks cleaned to me. AU details? What kind of retail does this have? Not mine. I'm not the one holding it.
I don't think it has what it takes to make AU, but the pictures are tricky to interpret. Look at the flatness of her leg, breast, and head. I'd be more comfortable calling this one EF details. There is definitely some polishing/hairlines/something in the right obverse field. If it is AU details, it might be $600-$700? If it is EF Details, its probably more like $250-$400.
V-1, Reverse of 1838 Large O, pretty scarce on the ground compared to the Small O versions. Don't think it quite makes AU, but close. I hesitate to comment on surface originality from these images. Although these are seen with weakness on the reverse as shown here, this one is kinda extreme from that standpoint.
Evidence of cleaning to the right of the flag to my eyes. Horizontal lines. The mint mark is thin around the bottom edge, shows some wear to me. Very nice coin overall...
From what I can see, the luster has been stripped away. No possibility for an AU due to the lack of luster. From the photos, I'd almost think they were scans.......everything looks so dull.....but then I see the hand and fingers in the background.
It's a Valentine 2 no drapery small open date high, the lowest left star is rather low,and close. The 3rd and 9th stars are defective ( that explains the 9 star looking doubled) Reverse small letters ,medium O rather low and a little to the left. Lacking the luster and some hair lines, I agree with it being cleaned and in XF details . As a half dime collector I still would buy this coin as it has plenty of meat on the bone. These little coins are often cleaned, but still offer a nice specimen to own. I also agree it's in the $200-290. price range. From the pups I am quite sure it is not an V-1 but a V-2 as stated. The V-1 has a small uneven date.
Xf 45 details. As everyone said. I'd put it in the 200-250 range. A tough date but not a lot of demand for half dimes
LOL I buy them every chance I get.... love this series . Bust or Seated they like shield nickels truly are my favorite coins to collect .
Wish there was more like you. I like them a lot myself. Just not real easy to sell not like dimes quarters or halfs
Well Bill I am easy and cheap easy to sell a half dime to ...cheap as my coin budget these days is not quite as deep as it once was..... but these are fantastic little coins.
www.seateddimevarieties.com/ Best website for this in my opinion. Gary has done well. Ck out my clashed 1840-O Gary help grade it.
I'm only going on my only reference to the series. That is Valentine book that is by all means out of print and an old reference . I can only base my opinion on that reference . Newer reference books on this series are very costly. And to be honest it's only my opinion and using this reference I myself could be incorrect . But by what my eyes tell me and what the book said is the basis for my call.
Strike weakness in the wreath bow at 12:00 on the reverse. Head could be weakly struck too. I think if the luster is present and just failed to show because of the lighting, it may go AU.
