First off I am waiting for a 1966 Balboa to arrive in the mail. As most of you know I have started a collection of US minted World coins. Well, the 1966 Balboa is on the PCGS registry list for US minted Wold coins. This is the reason I purchased this coin. Do a search for Panama https://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/mu...tured-by-mints-united-states/composition/4824. Next I checked Numista for more info on this coin and found that it says this coin was minted by the RCM and there were only 300,000 minted. Scroll about half way down page https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces9749.html So who is right? Is it a US minted coin like PCGS has it listed or is it a RCM minted coin like Numista says it is? Either way I am keeping the coin and just need to know which binder to put it in. Thanks...Mont.
Minted by the U.S. Mint. They are 90% silver like the Kennedy halves. After 1974 they did them in copper-nickel clad. All of the lower fractional Balboas are copper-nickel clad, like U.S. Quarters and Dimes, because they are struck on the same planchets. Some of the pieces were struck by Franklin Mint, but used the same weight and fineness blanks as U.S. coins.
Agreed. FWIW, the lower denominations (tenth, quarter, half balboa, all 90% silver) with that design dated 1961 were minted in Mexico. The 1 balboa coins minted after 1975 are a mixed bag, it seems: Mostly made by the Franklin Mint, others by the Canadian Mint. (What is funny, according to the Schön catalog, the RCM made them in 1975/76, in Cu-Ni plated copper but with a "Ley 0.925" inscription. ) Christian
I don't know. I'd have to look in Krause. I have had some of the mint sets, and the packaging is exactly the same as US Mint Sets from the late 60s to 70s.
Note: More than 200,000 of 1966 dates were melted down in 1971 for silver for the 20 Balboas. Varieties exist. From this page: https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/panama-balboa-km-27-1966-1974-cuid-1080976-duid-1542098
I was trying to find info on the different varieties of these, but can't seem too. Anyone know a website where I can find out what variety mine is?
Can't help with the variety question, but here is a great link I found for Foreign Coins minted by the US mint. Of Particular note, there is link to a comprehensive downloadable table near the bottom of the article. It lists, dates, compositions, diameters, Philly/Denver/SF, etc. https://minterrornews.com/news-5-13-03-foreigners_in_the_mint.html Seems like questions about this topic are becoming prevalent on CT recently, so I thought I'd share the link. I can't confirm the accuracy, but it looks pretty darn good to me
Hate to pull this out of the circular file, but.... I just won a 1966 Balboa as well and checking with Numista https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces9749.html apparently they were minted both by the US (200K) and the British Royal Mint (40K). I've been unable to find any literature that shows any mint mark or any differences between the coins for identification purposes.
This one was for my dad. And I did not realize until now that it was minted in U.S. A learning thread. They are nice! Thank you!
Not that I know of. That's sort of the premise of the revival of this thread, "Is there a way to differentiate between the minting locations"?
