Here are some of my more common world coins that aren't rare or worth much but I think look nice I paid 25 cents for each coin out of my dealer's junk bin Medieval Chinese Bronze Cash Coin, I like the patina. I have 50 or so Medieval ones but this is probably one of my favorites. More unusual coin, Medieval Chinese Cash Coin, made of iron. Any info? I got this because of the toning, way nicer in hand Probably the worst photo of the coin I have ever taken, toning is beautiful in hand and covers the whole coin. Cool Hyperinflation coin, photos are out of focus on this one. Tiny little copper coin, I like the color, nice eye appeal. Nice Eye Appeal Out of focus photo with poor cropping, Looks nice though Nice Eye Appeal I have a bag of 100 of these, Here's one with good eye appeal. More photos coming up.
Really amazing picks for $0.25 apiece! Your 1943 Australia halfpenny is also a doubled die reverse. It's a class 6, distended double die--the lettering is distorted, including the dots. I think I have the same coin, but not in such a high grade.
In my humble and worthless opinion, this is what coin collecting is really all about - finding things you enjoy looking at and holding and not wowing the world with rarity and king's ransom values. Though the expensive and rare stuff has its own fascination, and it's definitely fascinating , it seems to always overshadow the pure fun displayed by threads like this one. Post more!
I like the color contrast on this one I love the design on this one, the relief of it is very nice too. I love the color on this, I have some red ones but this nice even brown color is my favorite. Here's a better photo of the Halfpenny
I completely agree, rare key dates are cool but I would prefer a nice example of an early wheat cent for $15-$20 or so than spending $700 for a worn 1909s VDB. When I collect coins I try to look for the stuff that I would enjoy to look at rather than expensive key dates.
I love that Australian half Penny. Very nice toning! There's something about those pennies that cause them to tone quite nicely (don't mean to take away from the thread).
Beautiful coins, I noticed that too, I also noticed some other copper coins from that period tone very nice, a lot of times it depending on the country too. My favorite is the '55 you have
The term is "serendipity" meaning you found something you weren't really looking to find. That's probably the better part of collecting. Been that way for me these past 40+ years and I never get tired of finding something I didn't know was there.
Thanks! There are tons of beautifully toned aussie pennies. Have a lot more but these are the best. I have one that is toned this perfect metallic blue, but it's almost impossible to take a picture of the color.
For an attractive British coin design that can be had for next to no money, how about a halfpenny, with Sir Francis Drake's ship on the reverse - the Golden Hind?
