The two coins I just bought both came from the same Vcoins store. I asked their best price for the two coins including shipping to the UK and they knocked about $50 off the price. I think that Vcoins can be expensive but the rent is high and they have to sit on their stock. I have also seen ebay bids exceed some Vcoins prices. I was happy with the deal that I got.
Please PM the names of the auction houses you've been bidding at so I can claim my commission, thanks! Just kidding... but I'll be looking forward to seeing the coins you win.
Yes indeed... The abundance of choice is overwhelming! I'm going to be up at 2:30am Saturday night tomorrow bidding BUT it's convenient because that coincides with my expected arrival time home after a little nightclubbing. Mind you, I might not be sober at that point, but I have a bidding plan in place and will try not to detour from it!
The rake-offs and shipping will kill you every time when you buy online. That's why I like to get right in the dealer's face. But that's all but a dream, nowadays.
I know. All dealers have in Australia are Australian coins... and these are boring. So online is all I have. Sad face.
Since I have wide ranging interests across the whole of numismatics, I am always on the lookout for ANY coin that has an attractive price. That makes finding bargains much easier. I have been a serious collector for nearly 50 years, and so I have learned enough to at least have a few basics in terms of knowledge in any specialist part of coin collecting. At least, I can take advantage of the wide ranging knowledge that I do have. I WILL admit that I am not a leading specialist on knowledge in ANY part of numismatics. That is always how it turns out in life, when you deliberately set yourself up as a generalist, as opposed to a specialist in any part of numismatics.
Well yes, there's a couple. Cerberus on vcoins for example, whom I've purchased from a few times. I don't know any ancient specialists in Aus that have physical stores though.
I've had only good experiences with Cerberus, and they seem to be one of the vcoins dealers that lists at fairly reasonable prices.
Here's how I purchase coins at dealer prices........ I studied coins and collected coins and looked at zillions of coins and read every book about coins I could get my hands on for about 29 years until I got pretty good at as many areas of numismatics as I possibly could because I was going to see every type of coin imaginable. I took my and my wives' $70,000.00 life savings and fitted a shop with cases, lights and good security (but a lousy location--can't have every thing!). I manned the desk from 9 am to 5 pm six days a week for 15 years until I built a good reputation and a customer base. And believe me, I'm still not rich but I'm having (like the brand of cheddar cheese I'm eating) a hellava good time!
I love auction season! I only collection RR so I often don't even look at the other sections except maybe the first part of the RI to make sure no Imperatorials bleeds over or the last part of RP in the event Antony/Cleopatra is hiding there. This focuses my efforts considerably. For me, 75% of the fun of this hobby is the hunt and research. Did I mention I love auction season?
