Wow, it feels great to add another horsey-winner to my coin-stables!! Man, it was love at first sight when I gazed upon this sweet example ... => it's yummy & comfy (it's kinda like a nice worked-in baseball-mitt) I had a few targets in today's auction, but I managed to keep my underpants on and stopped after scoring this lil' sweetie!! my gawd man => that's not the spirit!! Ummm, hey check-out this link ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persephone ... yup, apparently we can all add Persephone to the list (I know I have at least one of those babies ... oh, and I'll definitely end-up posting it) ... hmmmm, majestic princess of the underworld, eh? Okay ... well, the first one is easy-peezy ... => here is another Hiketas-II (aka => Hicetas-II) SICILY. Syracuse, AE Hicetas-II 288-279 BC Diameter: 22 mm Weight: 8 grams Obverse: Laureate head of young Zeus Hellanios left Reverse: Eagle with spread wings standing left on thunderbolt. “A” in left field oh, and as always => yes, the green is hard and crusty, luckily it's not powdery and nasty!!
Alright! This photo was taken by my wife when I was in Korea in 2013: Fit's the season? Don't have a picture of my son in this year's costume yet. So, to keep things honest... Your link did inspire me search my collection and here's a coin featuring her son: Thasos, Thrace, BC 168-148 AR, tetradrachm, 16.12g, 31mm; 11h Obv.: Portrait of Dionysus Rev.: ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ to left, ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟΥΣ to right, ΘΑΣΙΩΝ below; Hercules with lion pelt in arm resting on club. M monogram left So, I'm not the expert on Greek mythology, but I did just read the Wikipedia article! Dionysus was the child of Persephone and Zeus, the same Zeus who was Persephone's father. Interestingly Persephone was also central to the Orphic tradition which held separate religious beliefs than traditional Greek religion, revered Dionysus, and may go back as far as the 6th century B.C. Also, initiation into the Orphic mysteries granted advantages in the afterlife. It is also reported that the Orphic tradition was practiced in Thrace. Interesting. Thanks Wikipedia! And thanks for the prodding @stevex6 because I just learned something more about the context of one of my coins! You're the man!
Thanks Jwt ... awesome dog costume Ummm ... I'll go again => here is a Persephone example ... Sicilia, Syracuse AE23 317-295 B.C. Diameter: 22 x 23 mm Weight: 9.7 grams Obverse: head of Kore-Persephone left, wreathed with grain Reverse: bull butting left, dolphin and above, dolphin below Reference: SNG ANS 561-571
I always feel like I'm last to the party but I am not online 24/7 as required to be timely when saying: Great coin Steve! Those horses belong in the collection of an animal specialist...like you.
Wow, thanks Doug ... I always love getting an occasional thumbs-up from my mentor!! (yah, it is a pretty cool example, eh?)
Hmmm? => you know me, I'm not superstitious => I don't have this lil gem "in-hand" yet (however, it certainly didn't mention polished) ... Hey, I'll try to remember to comment in a couple of weeks when this biga rolls into Manitoba (theoretically, I could also snap a few stevex-photos if you'd like) ... remind me a bit later, if you are really interested ... thanks again
Wowzers, that's another winner, Steve! I could look at that coin all day long. My Syracusan horse, courtesy of Timoleon and the Third Democracy:
You know, I wasn't entirely sure Doug was talking about the coin. I thought he was talking about Steve decked out in Batman garb clutching a bottle of...Pink Floyd wine? I could so go for a tall glass of Time!
